CR170 Exhaust Housing A/R

Does anyone know if the CR170 exhaust housing has a larger aspect ratio or physically allows more exhaust gas flow? You can purchase CR170 Hybrid turbos that have been retrofit into the CR140 exhaust housing. But if the CR140 exhaust housing is even smaller than the CR170, the EGTs would be astronomical.

Product for reference.

imo, cr170 isnt worth upgrading to. high EGT's, not much gain, PITA to deal with the high pressure EGR being on the wrong side, etc etc

if youre going to invest the time + resources into replacing the turbo for the purpose of power, get a REAL turbo upgrade like a GTE2260VZ from muchboost.

i got 200-220k miles out of my stock original turbo, before i replaced it for an upgrade. the turbo has no signs of wear / play even at more than 200k miles of (ab)use!

do some digging around the forums here to become educated on the tuning matters for our cars.
i can summarize, the big name "stage" tuners are really only good for stage 0.5 to stage 2.

any custom hardware, INCLUDING CP3, they are largely incompetent.

@Xtremefunky is a wizard with CR TDI tuning. i and many others strongly recommend him
@lemoncurd and @Xtremefunky seem like the folks to talk to.

Completely agree with everything said, just curious about the exhaust housing.. Also considering a GTB1756VK from Xman mostly because I have no facilities to fabricate a custom downpipe for a GTE2260 as badly as I want one :(
Fair enough, I just wanted to tag them so they could help out, I am a mk4 guy and cannot help at all haha

muchboost can make a GTD2260 which uses same flange size as OEM

the turbo tier list goes like this (best to worst):
GTE
GTD
GTB
CR

worth mentioning, i have a GTB turbo and use the factory downpipe flange.. no custom fab needed for my GTB2266 swap!

I spoke with Muchboost and they said they could make a stock sized V-Band flange for the GTE2260VZ!, so I reached out to MecEvo and asked if their flange (which is on my downpipe) would work with a standard v-band and they said I would need to cut the flange off and weld a standard v-band in its place. Link to the current flange below. Mates perfectly to a CR140/CR170 exhaust flange, but according Mecevo will not mate to a v-band. As much as I just want to give it a shot, and maybe cut down the center "hole shot", spending $2K on a turbo that may require fab work I can't do would reallly suck.

I've been hunting for a GTE, where have you seen these?

And just so I'm not threadjacking OP, these should be pretty close:

GTB1749VM (GT1749VC) 2,0TDI 170hp
Compressor
inducer/exducer: 36.4 / 49mm
A/R: 0.42
Turbine
exducer/inducer: 43 / 38mm
A/R: 0.62

if you wanted to save some money, and have the experience / tools, you can buy a GTE2260 off a TDI from europe. then weld up a manifold, modify the actuator systems, etc

Is the GTE worth twice the price (In your opinion)?

the price difference between those 2 comes largely down to the vendor.

powerTDI's welds look less perfect, and the product overall seems lesser quality. worth mentioning powerTDI doesnt specify compatibility with CR TDI's, only PD style.

muchboost also sells GTD2265VZ which seem to be quite good.

imo, it is worth getting the GTE over the GTD as the GTE has a built in OEM compressor anti-surge housing. the GTD2265VZ will surge without such housing

What is the spool characteristics of your GTD(?)2263 like? When does boost start building and when are you at full song?

i have a GTB2266, which has not been a great option. GTB has higher EMP, i then put a larger compressor on it which only compounds this issue.

i am looking to upgrade the intercooler to a wagner tuning unit. hoping this helps or fixes my EGT/EMP issue. if it doesnt, ill then go and save up for a GTE2260 + new downpipe.

so; i have no experience with the GTD2263, GTD2265, or GTE2260. only what i've seen and heard from others

xtremefunky has some videos on his youtube about the GTD2265VZ. you can hear the surging. he also covered that in his car build thread

my GTB spools at 2-2.2k, and is full boost at like 2.5k. which is quite astonishing for such poor EMP ratio's. the GTD and GTE spool roughly similar, the antisurge housing on the GTE allows you to push the turbo harder which results in a real world better spool.

i would imagine the GTD/GTE can spool at 1.5-1.8k, then be full song by 2.2k
but that is just my guesswork

Considering the price of the Wagner intercooler, check out the Treadstone TR6, it should fit perfectly into the lower bumper, below the crash bar and resting on the lower plastic support that the AC condenser sits on (this is the intercooler I plan to purchase). The stock intercooler locations forces all intercooler piping to dead-head into it, forcing the air to make a 90 degree turn. With a 2.5" basic intercooler piping kit from amazon, this will plumb right in and has fantastic pressure drop ratings. Only thing that will need to move is the ambient air temp sensor under the bumber.

i would also have to move my adaptive cruise control radar sensor, as that lives in the lower grille currently too

i've thought about doing a FMIC like one of those, but i figure it would just be better to fork up the money for the wagner tuning unit. it's a known good cooler and has really good pressure drop ratings + cooling capacity. sub ambient temp will be possible when spraying water meth

Ahh I completely agree given your situation. All I’ve got is the ambient air temp sensor on a half broken bracket so hardly any changes are needed in my situation.. if I had to mess the adaptive cruise radar I’d never touch it.. that’s an amazing intercooler 👍 if you’ve got some before and after videos once you get it installed it would be great to see!
