That would be great, hoping others can chime in as well. I have an audio recording but I'm not sure there's an easy way to attach. Linking to a video might be easier. Thanks

My highest pressure is about 1920 Bar as well. On my Malone ticket I was told fueling is correct.

I am using 0445010042 pump with 0 928 400 643 FMV, pump was purchased from Nerings.
Thanks for the info, perhaps I can relax a bit then. What tune are you running from Malone?

As far as the whine you're hearing... I don't notice a whine with mine but it does sound different than the CP4 did. I would describe mine more like a really big sewing machine, its a high frequency mechanical noise.

How many miles have you put on the pump?
whoops, overlooked your question. CP3 was done at 25k miles in 2019 and now approaching 200k miles on engine which means 175k miles on the CP3 itself. zero issues.

I just purchased the parts to do the timing belt on my 2013 A3 which has 102k mi on the clock, and was thinking about the CP3 "upgrade" as well. I'm in no rush as I have a quite a few miles left before the interval, and the weather is quite mild here easing the 10yr requirement, but want to do it sometime this year. I've read the last 20ish pages of this thread, and 2 main questions come up for me:

1) How likely is it that i can do this without having problems needing to recode. Since I am in california, tuner codes can be a big problem for smog, and while a lot of the more recent installers in this thread have had successful installs (and some very dramatically not!), the majority of them seem to have had some sort of problem that was resolved by an ECU tune update. I'd love to have that option, but just not sure i do.

2) In reading about lots of these problems, have these kits, even though there are more options, become inherently riskier, or are lots people quietly, successfully, doing this install and we only hear about the bad stuff because... internet?

Thanks!

There are some very expert people in this cp3 subject but I will give you my personal opinion, if you're wanting to upgrade to cp3 and you do so with the recommended fuel metering valve which is already discussed in this thread you shouldn't need to recode for anything. It will run with your stock setup perfectly fine.

I did a timing belt change and cp3 upgrade with the correct fuel meter. Drove it 1,500 miles without issue before deleting. Then programmed accordingly.

Thank you both and for your account, lead sled. It seemed like there were still several reports of people having fuel pressure errors, even when using the correct metering valve, so I was trying to see if it really is plug and play, out if it is a bit more touch and go than that.

Hey all! Happy to see this thread still going and it's been INCREDIBLY helpful for my DIY CP3 conversion after a CP4 failure at 53k miles...

Few things I'm still trying to sort out to get the car to run properly and could use some assistance on:

Context:
- Replaced with new injectors (0986435367) Huge shoutout to the support at Cascade German!
-CP3 pump (R70)+ fisher kit (R70), with the 0928400751 FMV
- Religiously cleaned all lines, tank, etc. Did the 2 micron flush of all lines for 1 hour as well.
- New sensors (fuel pressure + temp) on rail
- New lift pump, new aux pump
- New fuel filter (obvs)

1) I did a TB change as the same time and have the dreaded P0016 code after install. I've redid the TB job 3 times now and each time have confirmed TDC. Followed the DIY and re-read numerous times to ensure I didn't miss anything and still getting the P0016. Would there be anything else that causes this code to show up? I have a CBEA 2011. Other weird symptoms is that it will only start without the CVV heater sensor plugged in.

2) Getting a weird nailing sort of noise from the motor when it does start. When starting and running, sounds like a loud tractor but does NOT produce any codes once it does turnover.

3) at WOT, it produces the P0087 code, but I think that's a separate issue from the above. Live data shows 1400bar when on the throttle?

Really appreciate everyone's expertise here! Just bought the car (100 miles ago) and then it grenaded.

Best,
J

Reading this thread made my head hurt. What I'd like to know.
  • Who makes the best CP3 adapter kit?
  • Where can I buy a new Bosch CP3 and what part number or numbers?
  • What is a R70 pump, is it compatible or another name for CP3?
  • If I can't buy a new CP3 who has the best rebuilt?
  • What Fuel Meter Valve Part number? Any CP3's come with correct FMV?
  • Do I need to buy a 2200 bar rail pressure sensor / sender / transducer?
  • Tunezilla offers a CP3 tune option ($99 for me). Do I need that / what does it do?
    • I have Stage 0.5 with 2200 fuel rail sensor tune option but didn't add the sensor? Seems to be fine.

My goal is do no harm, reduce the risk of my CP4 hand grenade going off. It's good so far.

My TDI CJAA engine is 11 years old and has almost 90K miles. It is belt time.
I want a no drama, no code, no limp mode, no change in MPG and smooth running modification.
I also read CP4's going a long time and still going strong, CP4 problems exaggerated?
I hate seeing CP3's also making metal in this thread (apparently a less dramatic failure than CP4's).

I have to lay down after reading this thread.... Ha ha. Please help me with some good gouges, tips, hints.
I want to buy parts and get it all lined up...

a tune will be needed

the "plug and play" kits will "run" but you might get some weirdness during certain RPM at certain load
Thanks I have mild stage 0.5 tune. They (Tunezilla/Malone) offer a CP3 tune add on.

Seems this mod is a bit finicky and affects cars with a lot of mods, hot tunes, larger turbo, deletes.

I really want a new pump not used or rebuild. Any ideas?

you can actually buy a CP3 R70/R90 brand new right from auto part stores.
the pump comes on other vehicles.

the thing with autopart store pumps from what i've found, is that they lack the built in LPFP/auxiliary pump. meaning you'll have to keep that engine bay fuel pump.

part number for a BMW M57 CP3 R90 without auxiliary pump is 7788678

about $800 brand new from FCPeuro
