i honestly see zero benefits to using the bmw cp3, out of curiosity why would you prefer this setup? eliminating the factory lift/aux pump cleans up the engine bay and i dont think using the bmw cp3 makes anything easier per say.
Because I have access to a brand new BMW CP3, with a discount. The WP CP3 are not being offered as brand new anymore and I want a new CP3, not a reman.

Then buy cp3 pump from fleabay (eBay) new and buy WP cp3 mounting kit and you are golden.

Jinx! I was going to say the very same thing. I dislike BMW CP3 just because it requires aux pump and its more cluttering on the engine bay. One vendor whom I am not going to name, said “BMW CP3 is “overkill” compared to the gear driven CP3 then I replied saying then why do BMW CP3 require aux pump if its overkill? It dont make sense at all. From my POV, requiring pump means the BMW CP3 is weaker. Period.

He didn't reply back, he knows it that I am correct. Gear driven CP3 is robust that dont meed aux pump at all. LOL

plus removing aux pump benefits more cleaner engine and not having to worry about it leak! In past 1-2 months, I am seeing more aux pumps leaking due to age and wear/tear (on facebook)

Sure, I could do that if I know the part number of the exact same CP3 pump being offered in the WP/UD kit. I'd prefer to buy the pump through the local parts suppliers. I need CP3 and other parts to be accessible locally to minimize the downtime. I don't have a second vehicle that I can drive and I'm allowed maybe 2 days max of downtime due to the nature of my job.

I can easily get a BMW CP3 replacement in matter of hours. It'd be helpful to know the part number of the WP/UD CP3 and I will see how accessible the pump is locally.

Heres the tag that was on my pump, one of the original 2micron kits

Whats it going to cost you?
I really don't want to make it a FMW vs WP CP3 debate post.

My cost for a BMW CP3 is very competitive compared to the brand new CP3 from Europe which makes it hard for me not to go w/ the BMW option.

In the end, both CP3 kits are obviously better than the factory CP4 pump, isn't that the end goal?

Yes,
I was more or less just curious what they were going for, im not in the market for one nor do i own a common rail car anymore. Ill stick to my small fleet of mk4’s

Maybe I missed it but I can't seem to determine if I need to delete the aux pump with the whitbread kit or rather I can delete it if I want. The aux pump was left in and I have no code or anything but want to know if it's a detriment in anyway by leaving it in. I may still take it out for the sake of cleaning up the engine bay but it may be a few weeks before I find the time. Also will vcds still prime the fuel system properly for filter changes and such with the aux pump removed?

You -can- delete it if you want. Everything still works exactly the same and the CP3 does not require it. Much cleaner looking engine bay without it there as well.
Pretty quick to pull out fwiw, just make sure you have rags available to catch the fuel that comes out 👍🏻

So first post CP3 issue, changed the fuel filter, ran the lift pump through OBDEleven for about four minutes. Car started, shut off, then would not restart. So ran the lift pump again for 10 minutes, tried again, nothing still wouldn’t start. Let it run another 10 minutes, and nothing again. Car wouldn’t start. Loosened the #4 injector B-Nut, ran the lift pump, no fuel coming out at all. I reconnected the aux pump and loosened the #4 B-Nut again and immediately got fuel. Car started with the aux pump, I ran it for two minutes, took the aux pump back off, and it’s working fine now. Looks like I’ll need to reconnect the aux pump after every fuel filter change? Might as well just leave the thing in

Interesting you posted this, I just had this issue. Had to reinstall the aux pump to get the air flushed out after a fuel filter change.. I’ll be reinstalling it

What cp3 pump kit do you have?

R70 kit from Xman, so White bread adapter kit plus a black CP3 pump. It has the low pressure gear drive on the back. It’s worked fine with just the lift pump this entire time. This was the first time I’d changed the fuel filter, and it absolutely would not cycle the air out or even move fuel through the rail without the aux pump installed.

That is interesting...

I filled up my fuel filter canister with Liqui Moly Diesel Purge when I did my CP3/filter change so there was practically nothing left for the pump to fill.

If you didnt check to see fuel prior to starting, I would be hesitant to say you "need" an Aux pump; I just pulled the in-line (filter to pump) to verify and fuel was gushing almost immediately.

I flow from the lift pump seemed slow and steady rather than blasting out.. I took the line off at the high pressure pump and checked there.

for future changes, that’s what I’m doing before running the lift pump, taking off the HPFP feed so it doesn’t push any air into the system

I've done filter changes and even run straight from a bottle of diesel clean tucked in the engine bay then switched the hoses back to the lines to the fuel tank, and just running the in tank lift pump using vcds for a minute has always been fine.

If your cp3 has the built in gear pump the high pressure aux pump will cause more trouble that it's worth.

Check your hoses at the tank aren't swapped maybe? Could also have debris in the sender or a dying lift pump.

Everything is fine after using the aux pump to purge the air out. Hoses weren’t swapped, however during troubleshooting I took the return and pump feed lines off the filter housing to see how much flow difference there was. Interestingly, both the pump feed and rail return connections on the filter housing flowed out the same volume and at the same time.. so I’d assume with equal pressure on both sides of the CP3 no air could be purged. Once the aux pump was installed, it overcame the return pressure and push the air out..

So I’m trying to find more info or anyone who can assist. I want to upgrade to a cat fuel filter, however I keep seeing the same issue with metal shavings in the filter threads. I got a cat 1R-0750 and a 4770 filter head. Problem was, as soon as you thread the filter on it creates a load of metal shavings from the filter threads. So, I got a 306-9199 ultra high efficiency filter and 414-5138 filter head from CAT directly. Same issue, if you thread the filter on and take it back off, the threads are full of metal shavings.. is there any good fuel filter upgrade option? Or should I just stick with the stock housing and go on with my life?

Thanks!

To be honest, I run the CP3 thru the oem fuel filter set up. Those CP3’s are stout.

if you want to run the 1-2 micron fuel filter set up then help yourself.

I do this set up because I go to high volume fuel stations only (more fresh fuel) therefore “drive more worry less” applies.

You know I’m also considering capping the two returns on the oem housing and routing the rail and tank return together. So the risk of the oem filter feeding contaminated return fuel back into the pump is gone. (If the CP3 did come apart)… it’ll also get rid of my air purging problem post filter change 🤔

So here’s what I ended up with. No risk of contaminated return being mixed with unfiltered fuel feed. Only risk now is the lift pump and tank which I can accept. May setup a return filter at some point but not too concerned..

Hmm! Never thought of that. Will check with 2micron of your idea lol I personally like it.

spoke to 2micron, he said why not? as long as I am in the warm climate (Florida). good to go. I'm unsure where you are residing in, @Timma100
