I think I may be coming back to owning a TDI here very shortly and I think I've narrowed it down to being most likely the Q5 TDI. But I'd also consider the A6, A7, or even A8 TDI. BIGGEST issues I've had is finding a clean well taken care of example of any of the above cars.

So I'm wondering what common issues are there that I can look for with these cars 🤔

My fallback is also going to a mk6/mk7 golf or sportwagen.

A7/A8s should be easier to find "in mint condition" as they aren't typically owned by hooligans and are mainly dealer maintained.... at least based on the online shopping I've done on them..... but they are keeping their value a lot, so it all comes down to budget.

HA, yeah, that isn't happening LOL!
I had a budget of under $30k but I'd stretch it a bit if the car was worth it.

Solid point there. I also noticed a similar trend when I was searching on car websites.

What it really comes down to is the question of what are some common issues with these V6 TDIs that are in the Q5, A6, A7, A8s?

Anyone upgrade the cp4.2 to a CP3 yet?

I got my 2014 Q5 TDI a little over a year ago with 80k on it for $17K. Owned by an older lady who took impeccable care of it and it's been great so far. I've had several Golf and Jetta TDI's in the past, gave the mk6 Golf and Jetta back to VW in the settlement and drove a Model 3 until someone totaled it (which was also a fantastic car).

Just had the DEF pump replaced at dealer today on my 16 Q5, car has 119,000km and warranty on the emissions equipment is good till 193,000km. Wife had a 22 A4 for a rental and the dealer waved the rental fee as it took 2hr more then they told her, which is a bonus!

I have a '16 A7 that we bought about a year ago with around 70k, and my wife has a '15 Q7 that we bought around 4 years ago with 35k. Both of them are around 85k now. Other than regular maintenance, the only thing is engine mounts on the A7, and interior/electrical issues on the Q7. (seat back covers came unglued from the snap-in clip brackets, driver's seat longitudinal range settings, the electric tilt/telescope column completely quit, and the A/C condensate drain plugged.)
