This is a bit early perhaps, but who's coming from the east?

I'll take the 401, 403, through Sarnia and then 94 and 90.

I probably come with a vehicule other than The Black Variant of Death, diesel none the less.

So who's coming from the east, and what route will you be taking?

I'd like to go, but have to talk to my better half first and see if he's able to make it... If we do go we'd be coming from Jersey... Not sure what route.

Our oldest starts kindergarten this August. We will have to see if we can make it to WI. It would be our first TDIfest. We usually go to DHRA truck events. It would be a blast to come to a diesel car event this time. Hopefully we can

Thinking of going on vacation to your area of NC seems pretty nice. How is it?

Well ... I am planning on going and I live in Brantford ... I will be crossing the border in Sarnia. Not sure yet when we will be leaving, as that weekend is also my Wedding annivesary and we have a little one due about two months before the run.

Keep me posted. I'd enjoy riding down in a large convoy ... we will conserve the cloud of soot around us.

I'm sure that you made a typo saying that you are going 401 then 403 to Sarnia.
If you were to take the 403 just west of Toronto it would take you to Hamilton and then eventually back to the 401. Farther to go that way.
Take the 401 to past London, Ont. then take the 402 to Sarnia and the Bluewater Bridge.

Re: 2005 TDI Fest coming from the east

Finally got registered! Looking forward to a nice road trip and the usual Festivities. I was a little concerned about having to go through Chicago area traffic so decided to take the ferry across the lake from Ludington, MI. Thanks to CoolWht's post on another thread that reminded me of the ferry.

Now, if anyone can recommend where there is outlet shopping en route, my co-pilot will be very content.

Well if you drove through chicago there is a BIG outlet mall (Gurnee Mills) about 20 mins north of the city. Then there are 2 strip outlet malls just in Kenosha, WI. All 3 are right off I-94. Then there is another outlet mall about 15 mins. from the fest called Johnson Creek which is also right off of I-94. So the malls are there, the decision is yours.

Re: 2005 TDI Fest coming from the east

It looks like I'm going. The route is the big question right now.

From Boston, I'm thinking of taking I-90/I-80 out <dropping down to I-39 in order to skirt around Chicago>, and then perhaps taking a more scenic drive home, taking an extra day on the way back so that it's relaxing and hopefully an opportunity to appreciate potential 'changes' to my car. Better to do the long days on the way out, when there is the added energy level of looking forward to something. Taking it easy on the way back will mean going back into work relaxed from touring, instead of being bone tired from hours and hours of endurance driving.

Who's coming to this thing from metro-Boston area anyway? Anyone want to plan a common route back?

BIG thumbs up on taking the Route 39 path. I JUST got back yesterday from a week long trip to VA. Went through Chicago on the way down. Took 5 hours to get from SE Wisconsin to Gary IN.
UGH...on the way back, scooted over to route 39 and was home in about half the time.

Re: 2005 TDI Fest coming from the east

FWIW a friend of mine had a buddy who went up to Wisconsin last week on Monday morning via I-90 (Indiana Toll Road) - Chicago Skyway (I-90) - I-94 North. No traffic problems. Came back same way Tuesday morning - again no delays. Don't know exact times he went thru but bet it was either early in morning (before 6am) or mid-morning (10am-ish?) at a guess. So possible one may be able to get thru quickly via downtown Chicago if you time it right.

Don't try going north of downtown on I-94 after 3pm though on Friday - it gets clogged up fast after it splits off from I-90.

Re: 2005 TDI Fest coming from the east

CoolWht:

He left Bremen @ 7:eek:o a.m. ish, went up to the 20 bypass and then hopped on the Indiana Tollway, that put him downtown around 10 a.m. They left Six Flags around 8:00 a.m. on last Tuesday.... I'll probably be going up to Oshkosh the weekend before the 'Fest, so I'll have a handle on the traffic around the city. Hoping to get up there on Saturday morning, looking around the Ducks Unlimited Outdoor Fest, then head back that afternoon.

I hit Chicago at about 8 a.m. AVOID the rush hours if you can. Mornings from about 6 till 10. If you're coming in on Friday, avoid the evening rush hour from about 4 till 6 p.m.
