Colorado Springs - Need EGR Un-delete parts *quick*

First post - and I need help already :)

Apparently my county in Colorado, which has no gas smog laws, has a diesel smog check each 2 years. Ugh. I just bought a 2003 Jetta with only 125k miles on it. Unfortunately, the previous owner did a physical EGR delete but lived on the 'right' side of the line in this county. I travel extensively and now my 30 day clock to avoid a $100 late registration penalty is ticking.

I desperately need everything to do a correct EGR un-delete on my car delivered here in Colorado by Saturday so I can pass smog on Monday.

I don't have Bentley for this car yet but I assume I need:

Working EGR valve (complete)
EGR cooler with both intake and exhaust tubes
Anti-shudder valve
Anything else?
I suppose I'll get gaskets from the dealer

Paypal gift acceptance would be ideal, and priority shipping would really help me out unless there is someone local here in the springs...

PM or reply to this thread if you got what I need.

Thank you so much,

Tom

I think your car may pass as is. I'm not so sure that an egr delete would have a huge effect on emissions. I'd say go for it and see if she passes before you do all that work.

Thanks for that advice. I called earlier to ask what they do and they do a visual and check for check engine light before putting it on the rolling road so I will not pass today and Malone for a MIL tune out won't happen as they are closed for 3 weeks! I don't see what options I have except to reinstall for the test. It's just funny, because my land cruiser will tear your eyes if you drive behind me from the raw gas it doesn't burn, but that is ok. They don't like the black smoke from my Jetta going up the mountain passes....

Rent a code scanner from your local auto parts store. Clear the code right before you hand over the keys. Make sure the cat is super warm . See if it will pass as is. Go from there. What county are you in?

I have everything as I just did physical delete on my Mk4 Golf. Let me know if you want/need it and we can work on price.

This will not work if they plug a computer into your diagnostic port as the computer looks at the readiness bits. When the codes are cleared, the readiness bits are cleared and it takes a specific driving sequence to set them. If the CEL check is merely a visual check, then you'll be good to go.

Smog checks on diesels are a visual check on exhaust smoke. If they are using an IR scanner to do an exhaust opacity test, then you will need to be sure they have the tester warmed up and ready. I've seen these things report 60% or more opacity on exhaust you can't see with an unaided eye, so IMO these devices are a scam on the public in the hands of dolts.

Good luck!

Update:

Thanks for members already shipping some parts today!

I believe I still need the following parts:

1) Good EGR Valve with anti-shudder (can buy locally but $$$)
2) Good N18 Valve (EGR solenoid)
3) Good intake manifold crossover valve (the thing which controls the anti-shudder valve on the EGR

I live in El Paso county, and my car has no EGR at all, so I'm sure they would fail me when they open the hood on the visual. It also costs me $50 to try, and $40 each time thereafter with a 2-3 day wait to get an appointment.

This is not a huge deal except for my travel schedule and trying to avoid the $100 fee for late registration - putting all this back on the car will cost me under $200 plus I get back runaway safety, which with my luck....

Anyone have cheap good EGR, N18 and IMCV (what is that really called?)

Thanks!

Seems like all Colorado is testing for is opacity.

Having no egr decreases opacity. I think you are wasting your money chasing egr parts down. Go try the test. I think the odds are high that the inspector doesn't have specific vw systems knowledge.

Schedule two appointments if you are worried about getting a second appointment quick enough.
Or take an .... extended holiday in Wyoming.

How bored are you?

CO law is the firdt pdf on the search. Looks like a retest does cost money. But the law allows a second retest on the spot if you fail.

Some more information. There is exactly one shop in town who does this test, and this test is all they do on both light and heavy duty vehicles.

They do a light check on glow plugs and check engine before they administer the test. I.e. the lights must both come on and go out. If both don't come on in accessory mode you fail. If either light comes on during the test it is an automatic fail, regardless of the readings from the tail pipe.

I have VAG-Com for my Audi and will tweak some values and clear the codes tonight and drive a bit to see how the check engine light behaves, but my EGR is welded and blocked (not a race pipe) so at a minimum I will put a complete EGR in the car and block the port and see if they notice, only if the light stays off for a few dozen miles after the tweaks. If not then I've got parts coming which should pass me. Then I'll re-delete and pack it into a box and reinstall next time, just because I can.

I've read the links, I really appreciate you taking the time to help me out, but I just don't see how trying to pass with no EGR and MIL illuminated is anything more than blowing $50 which I should use toward my EGR...

I deleted my EGR on my ALH almost 2,000 miles ago (car is NOT tuned) and I still do not have a check engine light on (hard code, or any pending codes) about EGR flow. I am sure eventually it will come on, but has not yet.

Clear the codes and take the car for a ride. A $40 Wal-Mart scanner will not only clear the codes, but will show you system readiness with simple blinking lights that go solid, or a yellow light to green light. Few exits up and down the highway and you are golden.

I am in the car business and deal with stickers daily, believe me when I tell you that the inspector will have NO idea that the EGR is gone. A race pipe just looks like a normal piece of the intake piping. Long as you have the check engine light out, your golden.

Its your car so do as you please, but its much easier to pass than you think.

I have full Vcds for my audi and I just cleared my jetta codes, ran egr adaptation maxed out and cleared codes again. I think you at least need the n18 valve in the car because I throw a code instantly for n18 upon idle. No go, need to put parts back on the car. Thanks guys, I appreciate this, you guys are nicer than the Audi crowd ;-)

Ahh, I wasn't even thinking of the N18. My car still has that plugged in on the firewall, but vacuum lines blocked off.

Good Luck!!

Ahh is it normal to remove those valves / solenoids when doing an EGR delete?

Thanks to the forum I passed fine with all measurements below 3%. I got older square plug solenoids so the installation took around around an hour since I had to splice in wiring. I went ahead and just re-ran and reinstalled the entire egr to factory just so I know how it all works. Of course this was after 8 hours of replacing the clutch which decided to grenade itself late last week. Sigh. Anyway, I appreciate you guys all coming through for me.

I was surprised to see the tech actually lean way in to make sure the egr was not blocked off.
