most likely end up with a garbage tune too. all these "tunes" consist of a couple fudge up maps + mass delete of error codes and thats it. but it will feel good for a bit...

Saw a tdi today for sale with a “Stevenson stage 1.5” like what on earth is that lol.
Surprisingly, I have seen alot of talk about "Stevenson" tunes on couple of the Facebook groups and found out that alot of people say the tune is not good and has caused issues. I also really understood what these 1,1.5,2 stage tunes are. I've always just said to the Tuner "this is what I have done, give me a tune that works with this hardware setup".

You can’t put just tune in your Instagram bio for your car all the bros speak the stage language. The funny part is that as burpod looks at tunes my “stage 1” may actually be your “stage 2 or 3” the other thing I find weird and concerning is the amount of guys with a “stage 2” tune without any other mods. Even the box tune suppliers suggest you have at least a nozzle upgrade but who cares I guess. It’s all about rolling coal and telling people you have a stage 2

i've read in few stevenson alh tunes... no different than anything else. like i mentioned above. nobdoy even tries to go beyond the 0-51mg alh stock limits, let alone do anything "crazy" like change timing corrections for intake air temps, altitude, and boost for that, etc. or boost pid maps. just leave it all "stock" which makes no sense ifyou're dealing with totally different fueling. it's pretty sad

nobody seems to have a clue when it comes to pump/nozzles and maps.. it blows my mind what i've seen. i know i'm not perfect, but come one guys, be in the ballpark... the boost logs i've seen (with or without any hardware issues and i have put TIME into this with no $$) are atrocious.. but very few people even know, because they don't take logs or even have a boost/egt gauge. no wonder so many people blow **** up

Oh god, dont even get me started on how many people I see asking "What tune do I need to roll coal" or "What mods/exhaust do I need to roll coal?" Thats what alot of people just buy a TDI for. Or I guess any diesel in general. I thought that was cool when I was younger. I guess there are "coal tunes" for these CRs now.

Basically just a copy and paste of other tunes with a few minor changes. Simple "Delete emissions and make it roll coal" is what these garage tunes are. THEN wonder why their car runs like **** or blows up after.

Let’s just say I am very happy to have you as my tuner now. Who knows what could have happened. I like your method of getting logs to ensure hardware is in check before tune. But as we know it’s bad for business if you turn people and their money away because they have a hardware issues. It’s just easier to keep your mouth shut and slap that stage X on there.

No one monitors EGTs or boost. Even people who have the gauges, dont know what a danger zone EGT is. Its a "off the shelf" tune and people think it fits all cars regardless of what the setup is. I've seen this more and more in the CRs which compared to an ALH, is a first class ticket to blow-up ville.

honestly, not much to copy and paste. any newbie can do the same thing. thats the level of tune i have seen. it cracks me up reading old threads about tuners worried about people stealing their "tunes". one reason i left FB group was i got accused of stealing tunes trying to post a thread about posting up boost logs for discussion. instead i got a bunch of 20yr kids who think they're top dollar saying i'm trying to steal a tune from boost log data.. LOL.. F that.. all set

and i woudl say almost NONE of these people even know how to log. because i have to walk a LOT of people through the process of simply taking one single log, so it's pretty clear nobody has logged. don't even know where the file is saved... *shrug*

LOL, those are the ones running the "dump fuel, skyrocket the boost and send it" tunes on sale at your local gas station/walmart parking lot meetup. I remember when I had my Mk7 TSI, for a OEM turbo upgrade, The tuner and I spent 3-4 hours logging, making changes and going back out to log more. Different driving styles, etc. I wasnt mad, wasnt upset that it was taking hours going back and forth. I was just happy that there was alot of back and forth to make sure the tune was proper/clean and worked with the style in all driving conditions.

which is fine. years ago i didn't get it. i'm trying to help. and i will go far, far out of my way to help people with this as an enthusiast.... but don't come at me telling me i'm trying to "steal" some ****ty tune with a boost log for christ sake ignorant Fs.. sorry, i'm crabby :) just had a long, long talk with a guy recently who had a tune from a "respected" FB tuner... gt1752 who on the first test run blew it out to 40psi with no qualms about it. and continued to do so for the next 2 logs - not to 40, bet 32psi @ 3800rpm etc as he felt actuator was too short lol... so wrong. there will be more to be said on this particular one soon :)

Oh trust me, I've heard a fairshare of "tuners" talk about X tune and how it hits X amount of PSI @ certain RPM but when someone brings up fueling, they say it "never needs to be touched" or something along those lines. It sucks because alot of people have no idea what is going on or understand it so they trust them until the engine blows up cause you have like 40PSI at 2200rpm lol. Excuses are everywhere on FB. Those groups are a great read for when you have had too much mexican food and got to kill some time

he's on tdiclub too. that's all i have to say for a while :) ohhhh it's overboosting too much. that means rod length is too short or we have to "dial fueling back" if you want to control boost. same old BS. no thoughts about timing. the amount of advance i've seen isn't even in the same galaxy as to what i woudl use, per the pump voltage etc.

most tunes just use a nearly stock 10mm/.185 nozzle pump map. maybe fudged a bit (wrongly) and stock axis points. there's no way you can create a set of tunes for different pump/nozzles without trying to get IQ numbers right. yet everyone (in the US) does it. it's madness

Oh interesting. Wonder if the person is still active. Interested to see what comes about from it. I know you'd do a in-depth write up on what you found and whatnot. I'm always curious to compare right from wrong especially in a tune so I can understand them more.

I wonder if those tunes for different nozzles/pumps they are claiming is actually ANY fueling maps edited or if its just a stock fuel map with MAYBE a minor adjustment to make it act differently. Although, that may not even make sense. I have never touched a map/tune before, only watched a VERY knowledgeable tuner work the magic.

So ive seen what was said about air intakes and i understand that "cold air intakes" arent exactly cold air due to not being boxed off or grabing air from inside the engine bay but would this be a bad idea for a cold air intake? Its boxed off and uses the air inlet on the grill similar to how the stock one does ,i like the idea of not having to keep buying airfilters over and over agian.it the only reason i would buy this but i wouldnt do it if its only going to hinder the longevity of the engine

Oiled filters have a reputation for killing MAF sensors, which cost quite a bit more than the stock paper filter.
Thanks for adding that in i completely forgot about that ill just look for a oem one cause the other reason for replacing mine is because the screw holes on my original are getting cracked

The major problem with the OEM intake is that it is not chrome plated. If it was he (and others) would love it.
I actually dont care or mind lol the one i asked about isnt chrome plated at all. I just wanted see if it was worth investing in or not

This ended up being an interesting thread (some of it gave me a chuckle). All because I was curious if anyone was running SB filters on their TDI. I wouldn't, but I have one on my truck, because damn near everything Ford designed from the factory on my 95 F450 is pretty restrictive. But I have no complaints about the stock VW airboxes.

Cold air intake work if you get cold air. From the factory we basically have a fenderwell intake that flows pretty nicely into the turbo. I find they work well on trucks because there is no way a bigger engine is going to be breathing well through a smaller filter and intake pipes. If it can seal and get more cold air it’s a win. I think our stock boxes flow well but a metal TIP would probably not hurt anything. But putting a cone filter on may help with intake noise but I’ll probably lose you some power

I have a metal TIP on DSEL, but I've debated many times of dumping it and going back to stock, only because it's not the most ideal fit with the breather pipe. The airbox itself is an ARL, which is bigger, but I haven't noticed any difference between that and DSOL.

Now on the truck - yeah, as much cooler air as possible, since my generation of 7.3 doens't have an intercooler, and with the little mileage I drive it as it is, I'd do a ZF5 swap long before I even consider an intercooler.
