Looking at www.volkswagen.de site it states that the TDI diesel which gets 5.5l to 100km produces 145g/km. This mileage is equvalent to 42 mpg, mine gets a year round average of 47 mpg, which I compute at 210 g/mi of CO2. This is quite low compared to gasoline engines CO2 production.

Here are some figures from EPA. You can do the math:
CO2 emissions from a gallon of gasoline = 2,421 grams x 0.99 x (44/12) = 8,788 grams = 8.8 kg/gallon = 19.4 pounds/gallon

CO2 emissions from a gallon of diesel = 2,778 grams x 0.99 x (44/12) = 10,084 grams = 10.1 kg/gallon = 22.2 pounds/gallon

Based on these figures, a diesel would need to get about 14-15% better fuel economy to produce the same amount of CO2 as a gasoline engine. Thus a diesel that gets, say, 25% better fuel economy than a given gasoline engine would produce less CO2 per mile.
