I usually use a 1/2 inch socket extention bar to centralise the plate before I tighten the pressure plate bolts. Never had a problem so far on at least 12 clutches that I can remember. I just put the bolts in until they're gripping the plate and no more and then just kind of move the bar gently to nudge the plate. As long as you're gentle it should be fine. Don't force it if it's tight though cause you really don't want to damage the splines. Just slacken the bolts a little then try again. Hope that helps.

I've never got an alignment tool with a clutch kit personally. Sounds like a good idea though.

You can use an alignment tool, but since the input splines are very fine, they need little lining up, I usually just get them close and stab away...
