That was my thought, too. I recently did the front brakes on a friend's Mk7 Golf and one of the four brake pads came out of the box with the anti-rattle spring broken off.
That "spring" is just riveted to the pad's backing plate, and my broken one was "torn" away from that rivet, so I can see one potentially being "damanged-but-mostly-intact" and eventually working its way loose.
I told the owner that she might hear some clicking or metallic rattle when the brakes are applied until I get it replaced (new set of pads coming from the seller in a few days).
