I was just doing the normal oil/filter change this evening after some long summer drives across the great plains, and decided to check the air filter housing. What a surprise! That hemispherical fine wire "mouse screen" that many are so eager to remove was full of butterfly wings! By design, butterfly wings are not particularly good at letting air through the air filter and MAF. A quick shop-vac later, and they were removed. Car now has noticably better acceleration.
It's a pain, but I'd suggest a gander at the airbox/mouse screen area even if you changed the filter recently. Loads of winged insects out there just waiting to wreak havoc with efficient air flow during summer driving.
