Carl, the vag-com is with me, give me a call and you can come anytime today in my office, sunnyvale, or at home tonight, whatever is better for you. I suspect is the VASB, it does that from time ot time, but not always. I never had CEL, but some people got many ...... As for Jolene, yes, she has Bug (so, stiffer springs than us) and only HDs..... I am back from almost 5.000 miles trip around Europe and I absolutely can;t stand the Shine ride anymore. The Euro roads and the stock rental cars made me so much use to the ride quality, so the first trip out of my garage with my car was like driving with no tires. I guess is the age or whatever, I do not car, I give up, call me whatever you want, but I absolutely can't stand the ride in the SFBA with those springs...... Dieing to try Jolene's setup and if it is acceptable in comfort, I am putting back the stock springs!

Wow! West Coast forum... I never knew.

I'm in Concord. 2002 Golf TDI black. I've only seen two other TDI's in CA in a year and a half. I thought I was all alone out here.

You are not alone! Welcome! We are getting good numbers in the Bay Area...too bad they will stop selling TDIs for who knows how long, so we will be the "same people" for years to come /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks...

It's been only good times with my TDI. Then I found this site, it's great!

I tell people I drove from the bay area to Northridge (almost LA) and back to Harris Ranch on one tank of gas, with the air conditioner on the whole way and they are in shock...
But on this site, people will then list 60 different mods to double that... /images/graemlins/wink.gif

I love it...

Not sure if you had read this yet Peter ..... please if anyone needs a TB near or around April March ...chime in.

Is there anyone who would like to go plinking ..Target shooting.. I can set up target material and location near the gtg ?

I am now at the point where I would like to do the clutch upgrade! I will do the wrenching ...Just need someone who has done it for guidence. No my clutch is not slipping ...
but with some of my mods it only a matter of time.

Peter, It is a go for using the place in Alameda

I need a head count of all who would like to do the TB GTG in march or april.

We are going to have lots of space with no one to complain about noise, beer, wine, BBQ, diesel fumes...

Next door to the site is Rosenblum wines and St Georges spirits
http://www.rosenblumcellars.com/ California fine wines

http://www.stgeorgespirits.com/ some of the worlds best spirits hands down.

This is a family owned facility so we can clank tools till the cows come home!

Peter and I will work out the details soon

I will come for sure. I am moderately capable and love to see it done before tackling my own. I do want to watch and help do a timing belt before I start mine. I am new to this forum but can see a wealth of info and support.

CAR PROBLEM

Hiya, Doyle! You missed a good gtg this past weekend down in San Juan Capistrano.

What's Brian's sched? I was talking with a couple other guys and saying that we should do a Santa Rosa gtg so that we can get you and Hank back into the loop, but, it all depends on timing... Let us know what your scheds. are and maybe we can work something up in the next little bit or so.

BTW, did I read that right in the other thread, your Golf has 44K miles? Is that a typo?! /images/graemlins/eek.gif

CAR PROBLEM

Norman, I don't know what Brian's schedule is exactly. He is taking a vacation & here's what he said in his email:
"Will probably be leaving ~ Oct 25. and returning
~ Nov 2. Should I start in SoCal or Northern California? What about the
redwood trees and other CA natl parks? Are they still worth seeing or
have the libs destroyed them yet?" I think he was refering to you /images/graemlins/wink.gif!!!

I think he is just wandering around aimlessly in CA after visiting mickey in Utah
!!! I am in the middle of painting my 40'X46' quonset hut but I could use a mini-vacation~~~looks like rain is a ways off. I told him S CA is a write off.
Not a typo Golf has about 44K miles & needs its 5th set of tires /images/graemlins/eek.gif!!!

CaTdi2002, I sure read here, just did not have time to reply to your posts...... your plans sounds great and I guess it is going to be just another reat GTG for the CA folks. I would say, go ahead and organise it, start a new topic, keep records of e-mails, contact Pete, etc. It is quiet a time consuming task, and if you need help, just let me know and I will try to support you as much as I can. Meanwhile, would be nice if we can actually meet (In-N-Out this week?) and even maybe go and visit the place in Alameda, sort of little inspection and planning ahead of how exactly the event would go, etc...... I see "dparnell" is already "IN" and I am sure many more will need some servicing. It may seem too early, but it is not, so go ahead. Thanks, it is great to see the enthusiasm you have! /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Peter, you can call me Doyle or Mr. Parnell /images/graemlins/wink.gif. Peter Cheuk & I had the 1st BAGTG(or any GTG) here in Pt Arena about 5 yrs ago to compare our two different tuning boxes~~~he has since disappered from the face of the earth /images/graemlins/eek.gif, last seen playing with little tiny remote controlled nitro powered cars /images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif.

Doyle, I don't know if we can squeeze in a Brian gtg because of the short notice (and on account of some of us being a little too TDI-ed out, right about now /images/graemlins/crazy.gif), but let's see if some of us have a Saturday or Sunday free in Nov/Dec for a Santa Rosa gtg? That's always a nice casual drive and that Mexican restaurant hasn't gotten me sick, yet.. /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Doyle, you are maybe the only person in CA on this Club, about whom I heard so much but never met! That shooting GTG is so famouse, I have been hearing stories for years now, no kidding. By the way, Peter Cheuk came out few months ago at Dan's house and actually pleased us with his presence for the whole day! He no longer posts here, but I am sure if you old timers (the guys on the pictures) want to organise a GTG (perhaps the Santa Rosa GTG Norman is talkign about) then I am pretty sure he will show up too. Gary Donner also talks alot about you and he even showed me the amazing road that goes to your house once. Yes, we go for a drive to Mendocino from time to time, so I have an idea where you are. Well, looking forward to meeting you. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Peter, if you drove Mt View road to Hwy 1, you were about 15-20 minutes from my house /images/graemlins/eek.gif!!! My personal best w/o my wife in the car is 32 minutes coming back from one of the BAGTGs. If you're ever going to be in the area give give us a call @ 707-882-3229~~~otherwise I'll see you @ a Santa Rosa GTG. For everyone's info our 2+ mile dirt road has been graded & rocked to the tune of $15K /images/graemlins/eek.gif~~~so you won't loose any oil pans.. It's been warmer than usual of late & I'm trying to paint my 40'X46' quonset hut shop~~~WHAT a job!!! New additions around here are a 03 Jetta TDI wagon, a 550 gallon fuel tank, a 1200 gallon stainless steel fuel tank & 5 HD vinyl buildings 1 12'X20' greenhouse(that makes 2 that size & 1 smaller one), 3 12'X20' garage type building & 1 30'X40' humugo building so I can get my backhoe & other cars out of the weather~~~I need to derust & paint it again. Look forward to beating our 5-6 person GTGs!!! This will give all that have not been here what it's like: http://dparnell.mystarband.net/ 30 acres under the redwoods, 1.5 miles from the ocean & solar powered. & I just took delivery of 2310 gallon of off road diesel @ $1.126 & 407 gallons of gas @ $1.616 for a total of $3495.34 with sales tax /images/graemlins/shocked.gif!!! Come one, come all for a visit. Here is some intersting info on Mt View Rd http://www.pashnit.com/roads/cal/MountainViewRd.htm

Doyle, something tells me that Norman will love the post above! /images/graemlins/grin.gif Since I know him, he had been saying that we HAVE to find a way to visit you again as your area/place had been fantastic and how beautiful the drive was and so on and so on....... Yeah, let's rest little bit from this one and I am sure we can do a small GTG before the TB GTG next January. you also have to meet a lot of folks from the Bay Area, really nice people! Looking forward /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hey y'all, nuke is still around!

I'm getting ready to do the 10K service on Dorie's TDI Beetle. We're now engaged, so I guess I'll be doing 10K services for a long while now.

Anyone know where to put the jackstands safely so I can rotate the tires?

I'm on the same bat-channel, e-me at larrysb@aol.com

Hey, Larry, glad to hear from you! How is the Corvette doing? /images/graemlins/smile.gif

As for the Bug, if you place the jack in the front (behind the front wheel) and lift the car little bit higher, the rear will come up too. At least mine is like this and it is stock.......

The Corvette is still red. I've been real happy with it, no real problems a year later. Just a wheel weight that decided to go for a walk around the rim, leaving a scratch. Chevy fixed it by re-clearcoating the wheel.

I put on a titanium exhaust system from the Z06. Yup, mufflers, pipes and tips are all pure titanium. Lighter than you would believe.

Her Beetle though is a little different. In the same year and not just a few more miles, she's had it in for service a bunch of times. Window regulators went out, the instrument cluster went out, the fog lights went out, a wiring harness went out. She likes the car a lot though.

I'd buy another diesel in a hearbeat, but I'm not real inclined to buy a VW until their QC changes.

Good idea on the beetle, I'll try that. I'm going to use the second jug of Delvac 1 I got from you Peter!!! Remember that?

I see some of the same discussion of sulphur and what not going on. I guess some things never change. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

It's real surprising, but the TDI runs just fine if you don't mess with it. Just fuel it and change the oil on time.

Hey all, sorry i've missed all the action lately!!!

Believe it or not i had a great dealer experience i thought i should share...

(obviously only those with warranty work need be concerned)

Two Probs:
1. right front rotor grooved badly at 5K miles
2. light metallic rattle over washboard type bumps - driving me crazy! Occurs only between 10 mph - 30 mph.

Took it to Sonnen in San Rafael 7:30 am. The "advisor" was standing outside waiting for me when i got there. They shuttled me back to my house in fifteen minutes (didn't make me wait til there were more people needing ride). They have retired folks do the driving (kudos).

A half hour later Bob, the mechanic working on the car called to get all the input he could before starting the job. He had already test driven the car and said he heard a few rattles. I was impressed. I told him it would be a good idea to lube all the caliper contact points. He agreed and said he would do this and check all bolts throughout.

2:00 pm the advisor calls:
1. They replaced both rotors and all pads. Boom, done.
2. Bob had found small stone in the rotor housing and believed that was responsible for the rattle. He didn't know if Bob had lubed caliper, but said to wait to see if it was the problem.

The shuttle picked me up in fifteen minutes. They washed *and* vacumed the car! I was outta there with zero charge.

Of course the frickin rattle is still there. I'll call to see if Bob actually lubed the caliper contact points...

Any ideas on the rattle???

Jason, we can meet osmetime next week and see what we can do with that rattle. It is helpful one ot drive the car at 10 mph and the othe rone to stay outside and try to catch where it comes from. It helped solve few rattles in previous cases.... HWat did you do for the oil change you were aksing me? I send you an e-mail, but you never replied. Nice also to hear about your great experience in Santa Rosa! Maybe VWoA finally pulled some ears, as Norman was also reporting outstanding service fro another local dealership just few days ago.....

Everybody - shall we do a In-N-Out this Friday? Same place, same time? I will bring the vag-com ......

Peter, glad to hear you're back. Sounds like you had an awesome trip...as busy as you usually are you deserve it /images/graemlins/smile.gif The 5K oil change was piece o' cake. Sucked 4.25 quarts out with the larger Pela. Used a 76mm oil wrench for filter cap. Total time = 1/2 hour. BTW, didn't do the water drain though...when is a good time to first check this?

Sounds great, checkin out this rattle (drivin me nuts!) and maybe we can compare the mystery ghostly whine sounds of a Jetta vs Golf!

You guys are still due at Kezar! Let's email bout hookin up...

BTW, its Sonnen in San Rafael and take my word for it NEVER go to McNevin in Berkeley!

Another note Peter...

Did you check this out for the low speed front end whining?

"This is correct, there is a TSB for a humming comming from the front end of the car, while the wheel is turned sharply at low speeds, the solution - drain diff. and replace with synthetic. This worked on my 02 jetta."

Ha!!! This is a good one! At least an answer and something to try. Who knows why I always thought our cars do have synt. oil in there but from the post seems like it is not true........ The other thing is, if there is TSB, then why no deal knew about it and when I was sending the car, everybody said it was "normal"? Well, guess what, synthetic goes in there ASAP! Need to do some search on which one to put thought.... Thanks a lot, Jason! We may actually swing by this weekend to have a meal with you. Call you Friday! Ciao /images/graemlins/smile.gif

P.S: Forgot.... do not worry about water in there, it is too early, but if you can't sleep a tnight, we will check it when we meet. I had two filters so far and both stretched to 30.000 and never even looked below for water. Once the filters came out, we tried to drain and see for water and in both cases there was NOT even a bit. In fact, dealers do not do it either, not at the 5 and 10K services I have seen at least.....
