Chipping a Automatic TDI?

I had a 2000 TDI Manual and had it chipped, gave it to my son. Purchased a 2013 Passat TDI automatic. Was wondering if you can improve the performance of a VW automatic by chipping it? If so would not consider doing it while under warranty. It is pretty peppy as is, just curious.

Depends on the production date can be tuned.
You car gain is 30hp and 55lbs toque , also the DSG transmission can be tuned to take the additional torque that the DSG back off when the request is too high, beside all the benefits of the DSG transmission can be set up like manual transmission and activate launch control and increase the shifting quality and speed.

I don't think launch control is available for the Passat. There is no off button for the TCS

Thanks for responses. Not sure I understand what has been said concerning chipping or not to chip a automatic Passat.

The Passat has a DSG transmission. The stock programming for the DSG controller tells it to limit engine torque to about 350Nm (258 Ft-lbs). The stock engine torque is rated at 236 Ft-lbs. Therefore, it doesn't take much additional engine output to cause the DSG controller to limit engine torque during shifts. The better (stronger) the engine tune, the more noticeable is the DSG's dialing back of engine output just before it shifts gears.

An engine tune without a DSG tune will work. How you drive the car and what you expect out of the car will mostly determine how objectionable you find the DSG controller's ability to limit engine torque during shifts. Some people don't mind it and some people find it very irritating. For the ultimate in performance, you would probably want to tune both the engine and transmission's controllers (ECU+DSG tune). I hope this helps.

Have Fun!

Thanks Don, That, pretty clearly gives me a better understanding of what would be going on. Still have a long way to go before the warranty runs out. Hopefully, sometime before that I might run into someone who has a DSG chipped and see how it performs.

Just another thought, is there any downside to the life of the DSG transmission?

I think that the jury is still out on this question. We really don't know what the long term effects on useful life of a tuned ECU and DSG. One thing we do know is that "Launch Control" which is often activated in a DSG tune is not good for the transmission. Oilhammer has seen several DSGs that were killed by "Launch Control" (mostly not in diesels because no TDIs left the factory with "Launch Control' enabled).

I chipped my 01 TDI auto shortly after I got it on 2000. My transmission doesn't have a very good track record here but I have 170K on it without any issues so far. I know this is not the trans you have so it probably can't serve as a guide.

I just ordered the 6 speed manual and parts to do a swap..I'm just waiting for the auto to die. Perhaps after another season of AutoX..I might not be able to wait. I'm so excited to change it out.
