Is this as big a deal as they make it to be? What's the thermal efficiency of VW TDIs?

IIRC I believe VW increased the TDI's thermal efficiency close to 70%!!

VW made me an offer...................I could not refuse.............$25,000 large for my 2013 JSW with 50,000 on the clock after circa 5 years.
(So i bought another Jetta with a tiny motorcycle sized 4 cylinder .............It has never had ANY issues from delivery to 62,000 miles.)

Hats off to the engineers in Wolfsburg!
