Hey guys,

I've been a long time TDI fan, I have owned two ALH Jetta's in the past and love the reliability of these motors. I have recently come across a fairly high mileage BHW (256,000) with a blown turbo for a pretty decent price. I am planning to go take a look at it this weekend and am wondering what you guys recommend checking while looking at the motor. I am new when it comes to this motor and any info would be helpful. I have read that cam wear is fairly common on these motors. Is there a good way to check this without pulling the valve cover?

Thanks in advance.

Look at the service history, primarily oil changes. If the correct oil wasn't used then you can bet the cam is worn. Plan on replacing it, doing the bsm delete or geared balance shafts.
Pull the air filter cover and listen for the thump, thump, thump sound while running.
Wouldn't hurt to connect up a vcds and scan it.

FYI, the turbos on these are pretty durable. Normally they only go bad due to lack of oil. In this case it could be the BSM oil pump hex shaft is slipping or the oil seal in the turbo is shot and it dumped the oil.

At that mileage the trans is a huge question mark. A free car with a bad trans is an expensive car unless you are gonna part it out...just a thought.
