my 96 Passat in at an idiot body shop after a bout with some vanlalism.

Shop says the giant gap they left above the rear window is in spec. I just need some specs from VW to help out my case against them.

I'm also having a fellow TDI club member bring his car over as an example of how to do it right.

If anyone knows body work I'd appreciate you looking at the picture of my car's problem.

Original manufacturer glass is marker "Sekurit". Other glass manufacturers might have marginally smaller dimensions, still within tolerance but on the small side, to allow for less than perfect sheetmetal panel patching. A replacement glass panel on the small side of the allowed tolerance in an untouched frame opening might be the cause of the gap.

Since it looks like your rear window is "lifted" at the outer edges I'm thinking the glass you got may not have been stored properly and the curvature changed in storage. The only other thing I can come up with, and I've never installed a passat rear window before, is that they've used too much sealer in the center and it's keeping the glass from setting down at the outer edges. I'd keep complaining until it's corrected. The ill-fit can only lead to trouble later on if you ask me.
