Check engine light/coolant guage connection?

The last time I had my check engine light checked out, it was a glow plug issue (which I am currently diagnosing)...does this have any connection to my faulty coolant temperature guage not working at all on my dash while driving?

Did an ops check today, found 1 of the glow plugs to be bad (12+ ohms)...reset the battery and still have the check engine light! Then I did a voltage check on the harness itself, all were around 11.5 volts when the ignition was on (w/ in 20 seconds). Any thoughts as to why I still have a P0380 code or is it maybe a coolant temp. sensor?

Disconnecting the battery will not clear a glow plug code... you need to find someone with a scanner.

The ECU does not monitor the coolant temperature gauge, so your CEL won't be related to a malfunctioning gauge.

I have the same code going right now with my '00 Jetta TDI. I haven't had time to look into it. This is the longest I have ever let the CEL stay on. I double check ever few days with my ScanGauge to make sure there is not another code.

I've heard that the harness connection to the tip of the GP can become corroded and cause a CEL. Also, those earlier engines are known to need a new GP harness. The ECU monitors the GPs and associated electrical connections.........the deviation must be minor!

I checked the voltage on each female end of the GP harness and the I had a consistent reading of 11-12v. I am now curious if a scanner will clear my CEL. I will let you all know tomorrow.

Your basic scanner will not clear the CEL, but many CEL's will clear after the problem is corrected and the car has been driven enough cycles. (fully warming up and cooling down).

A basic code reader/scanner WILL normally clear the CEL, but unless the issue is corrected the CEL will return upon restarting. Most generic readers will display the numeric trouble code, but give no description of it.

The trouble with generic scanners is the don't fix the problem. They can turn off the malfunction indicator lamp but your ECU will recheck the components at start up. If it finds a defect it will tell you... again. My understanding is if you delete the codes without fixing the problem your ecu will simply freeze frame the data until it runs through a bunch of cycles. If you're due for inspection your on board diagnostics will read as "not ready" and you'll fail. Make the repair, THEN delete the codes, and last start your engine.

According to Bentley you either have a bad instrument cluster or a Faulty coolant temperature sensor. Replace the CTS and your guage should work again.:)
