There are just too many to list....
how about a 2002 Passat with less than 150K ? I would rather see it gone than having to do the timing belt on it

Give me an address, I'll come tow it home. Timing belts are cake on all the B5 engines, regardless of which one. I wish they were all that easy.

This I cannot comprehend . . . the timing belt is routine maintenance, much like brakes and wiper blades . . . why make such a big deal out of it?

Power windows ? give me the manual anytime , passenger window came off the clips again
I think I detect someone who is averse to proper maintenance . . . . While I have never been in your door, power or manual, the guides and lift is the same in all I have seen, save for the power source. And when something comes off, you figure our *why* and correct it, not just put it back so it can happen again . . .

Agreed. The numbers just don't add up, unless you're going to buy a TDI no matter what.
When it comes to buying a new VW, diesel is my primary consideration. I can buy many of the Asian gassers for similar or sometimes less money than the corresponding VW gasser. They also give me more places that I can get them serviced without having to go back to the dealer's garage or a guru.

Kudos to VW for offering this. I don't want, need, or want to pay for a bunch of fluff options. I know the tdi is more expensive to make, and am willing to pay the premium. And yes, the tdi option may not make that much sense in a purely economic analysis. Got that. But other factors make it worthwhile in my decision. Lots of money gets spent by lots of folks in ways that makes no sense in the economic realm. I do that daily!!

But I don't want to pay for my tdi engine premium through useless fluff.

If you want to see expensive fluff, take a look at the €12,000 options in this invoice (options priced at $16,320 in U.S. Dollars ):

The Canadian equivalent is the Trendline+ TDI trim. It's a $5,000 premium over the 2.slow Trendline+. (1.8 TSI is not available on the Trendline+ trim)

Important note for Multifunction trip computer (trip time, trip distance, average speed, average fuel consumption, current fuel consumption and distance to empty):

The 2014 2.slow Trendline+ does not have the Multifunction trip computer!

The 2014 TDI Trendline+ has it.

On the other hand...

Our 2011 TDI comfortline does not have the Multifunction trip computer, but was available as part of a $1,100 option, called technology package or something like that.

Is this an answer to VW's electrical problems? Windows that roll down without switches that don't work and motors that fail? If only I could be so lucky! :p

LOL. For the past thirteen years, I drove a bare bones Honda Accord. Windows rolled down manually, doors locked the same way, no AC, no luxuries of any kind. It was a great affordable and reliable vehicle when I bought it, and at the time, that was all I wanted (I had gone through some extremely unreliable clunkers previous to this). I used to proudly tell people "less options is less opportunity for things to go wrong." Which is definitely true.

However, I've reached an age now where I must admit that those extra "luxuries" are pretty nice. I'm tired of driving the bare bones option. I want AC in the summer. Power door locks that I don't have to fumble with manually in the pouring rain during the nine months that can happen where I live. I also get lost in my own home town (I was born with a direction sense deficiency, just ask my husband) so the nav option is much nicer than I ever thought it would be. And my favorite luxury? Heated seats.

I think it's awesome that VW is offering this affordable option for people. It is wonderful to have a diesel option that is closer to 20k than 30k in price. But I would still buy my loaded JSW if I had the choice all over again. :)

I feel the same way , less options , less stuff to break
and considering that VWs are plagued with electrical gremlins , less options means less wires

Wiring for DAYS!!!!! yeah I dunno yet why they have such problems, I have torn out every single wire in my jetta doing a swap and I have no idea how they could have problems, the wires are wrapped tight, the splices are heat crimped and gift wrapped like a china vase about to be launched into outer space and the clips and connections are solid and should never come apart.

but then again the jetta body I am swapping into, the power windows will not roll down, prolly just a fuse, maybe a bad controller, or a cut connection, but most def not the wire bundle, there is no way!
somehow they have issues, and I couldnt tell you why, I was rather impressed with the wiring in my car, it just blew my mind:eek:

Did I read that right about the only option being an automatic? If so finally a way to prevent dealers from optioning out everything on their lot. That's a big reason I haven't looked at a new one in a while. Every dealer I look at has tons of new TDI's that are all almost identical. Max option Passats and Jettas. Sorry I don't wanted heated/cooled leather seats, big aluminum wheels, sun roof, 50 speaker radios, etc....

I want a base model diesel!!!!
AGREED! they made them a long time ago...... you can find them, if you can do the work you could recondition an older Jetta, rebuild the motor, replace some fenders, change the paint, replace brakes bearings and tires and bam you gotta a bare bones TDI 5 speed for prolly half the cost of new! and better mpgs, I dunno just dreaming maybe;)

My '12 Golf is a manual and has no options. I had to wait for it, but if I'd wanted a black one I could have had it right away. They are out there.

I don't get the decision making on this car about where to strip things out - they left heated seats and the two extra speakers. If you are going to bother with the value edition, make it mean something! Half this country doesn't need heated seats, and the other half couldn't care less about the radio.

And the third half wonders why they would put heavier steel wheels on the car.

My '12 Jetta is bottom of the barrel base model 6 speed. The only option I added was the spoiler. Got monster mats and cargo blocks thrown in free.

I can't stand HAVING to get a sunroof and $1000 stereo I don't want. If you wait, they are out there.

Well finally VW has stepped in the right direction which is nice to see a simi stripper TDI again. Like OH says, you can still buy the Jetta S for $16-$17K which is hard to beat. The 2.slo is time tested bomb proof and and coupled to a manual trans would probably outlast a CR TDI....

IF you have the ability, the time, and the space to do all that, then, yes, you can rebuild an older car into better shape. Once done, though, you still have an at least six year old car.

but....

most people don't have the money to recondition older TDI....

you can finance a new, or slightly used TDI though

Often, you can finance the new car much cheaper than a used one.

I'm glad to see VW doing this. It shows progress in the right direction. It's budget minded. It's not gawdy or trying to be something it's not. It's not trying to recapture the manufacturers previous status or trying to gain a new age bracket. It's simply there to save cash.
Personally, I wouldn't get one, but that's just 1 person. I like the MK4 visually the most, hence why I have one. I don't mind putting in time to get things fixed, but for others it's a bother. I've got a list of things that I'd like to do. I've done things already and will keep doing things to it. Working on an older one is more of an enthusiast kind of a thing. We get attached to certain platforms or generations for whatever reasons and stick to them. For example, a friend owns 7 AE86 corollas(and few random cars), plus the one his dad has. The car that he is working on currently to pretty much everyone but the hardcore enthusiast is worthless. It's not going to be worth the paint that will go on it. We are still working on it. I'm learning to do things. It's all practice to weld, body work, mechanical and such. He helps me work on mine. The motor was in pieces in the trunk just a little while ago. It now fires and runs just fine. There's a lot of metal missing due to rust and is getting replaced. Body work, brakes, suspension, etc etc. That all doesn't matter. To some people it's easier to get a new car, something like this new Jetta. To the rest of us enthusiasts, theres only that one :)

Unless my math is wrong you're still spending more than a $5K premium for the diesel. Given the less expensive fuel for a gasser and even allowing for the FE improvement, you'd most likely never get that cost premium back in fuel savings. And even the $2,400 difference between the 1.8T SE and the TDI would be hard to recover: I did the math on that with current fuel prices and the TDI would have to average 43 MPG here to break even on fuel cost.
.
Yup. I partly purchased my TDI for the diesel novelty factor. I too ran the numbers and it was obvious that the 1.8L gasser was the better bet, $$$$ wise.

When I got my car, they were blowing out the '13's. I got my car for under $22k (the base model was going for $20k)...I could have gotten the gasser for $14k. That was pretty tempting (that and not having the possiblity of an HPFP issue in the future).

If I went the gasser route though, I wouldn't have the diesel pitter patter or the stupid long range with highway driving. :D

Talk about long range, I wonder if there was a TDI in the traffic jams down at Georgia.

Imagine everyone running out of gas in that FROZEN hell, except the TDI driver...

Then again, I wonder if the engine idling in the stagnant traffic for so long would be harmed.

Sounds good! I had to pony up $3500 additional greenbacks. No DSG, NAV or Panoramic S/R.

I can't think of a better use for my Naval Reserve $$$
