At that I'd still hold out for the new engine. Offering it with steelies and cloth seats is good though but it sounds like they haven't done anything about the intercooler and HPFP issues. I'd also like to see small overlap crash reports of "good".

I like the offering of an almost basic car with a diesel. After these few really cold mornings, I could really go for cloth seats. That leatherette is cold and the seat warmers take a while to thaw my butt. I could see my daughter trading in the 03 Passat for one except that she has no money and the Passat is paid for. Passat is also still under 100K miles.

Yep. I love my B5. Always did.... I drooled over them since the Audi A4 came out in '95 ('96 model).

Did I read that right about the only option being an automatic? If so finally a way to prevent dealers from optioning out everything on their lot. That's a big reason I haven't looked at a new one in a while. Every dealer I look at has tons of new TDI's that are all almost identical. Max option Passats and Jettas. Sorry I don't wanted heated/cooled leather seats, big aluminum wheels, sun roof, 50 speaker radios, etc....

I want a base model diesel!!!!

Order a base car, but first go to VW.com and build your own car. There aren't many options to remove.

Well that has been the problem, the TDI gets tarted up with almost everything manditory. Even this "base" model diesel is still pretty dolled up, IMHO.

If the HPFP fails, you can just throw the whole car away and buy another one! Maybe keep the wheels so you can sell them to someone who owns a gasser that might last long enough to need new tires.

Flame suit on. ;)

Unless my math is wrong you're still spending more than a $5K premium for the diesel. Given the less expensive fuel for a gasser and even allowing for the FE improvement, you'd most likely never get that cost premium back in fuel savings. And even the $2,400 difference between the 1.8T SE and the TDI would be hard to recover: I did the math on that with current fuel prices and the TDI would have to average 43 MPG here to break even on fuel cost.

I believe the diesel option on my '78 Rabbit was $750 over the 1.6L gasser, and on my '02 Jetta I think it was $1,000. Then you're in the ball park.

You get almost all of the Diesel premium back at resale throughout useful lifetime so it's largely irrelevant to compare it to the 2.0 Jetta S in the same way the Hybrid or GLI are at least $10-15k more over the S and they're essentially the same cars but the values of the premiums are highly debatable.

Except not everyone trades a car off like that. And I'm pretty sure that after 250k miles, a 2014 Jetta TDI won't be worth $5k more than a 2014 Jetta S. :p

And it certainly won't make up the difference one could have made that same $5k earn in that time (yes, I know interest dividends are not paying much now, LOL).

Let's be honest, if you are on the planned obsolescence route regarding cars, you really are wiser to buy a slightly used car anyways, and let the initial depreciation hit be taken by someone else.

No, it never is, no matter the car, but in % terms, it's pretty close. Say a new car costs $25k as a gasser and $30k as the Diesel version of the same - a 20% premium to keep the math simple; at resale the Diesel can be expected to fetch at least 20% more. I consider this a worst case scenario. Used TDIs are fetching a lot more, percentage wise, over comparable gassers. That's what I meant by keeping the premium.

We were looking at the "what if" scenarios over the holidays and saw that the 11 TDI Golf is valued at $3500 over the gasser at retail. Current (2014) models have about $5000 msrp difference.

Fortunately, I get to keep all my toys for now.

You can't compare Golfs: The TDI has a higher equipment level than the gasser. But if you do the '14 Golf TDI is $5,200 more than the gasser. So you only get 67% of the premium back in that example.

As usual it was a mistake to read the comments.
My brain hurts ...

A useless gear in the six cog manual box; the TDI's 4th and 5th are virtually the same ratio
...

Flaps @Joe_Skeptical 4th and 5th are the same ratio because when you put it in 5th gear, it changes the final drive to a taller ratio. 5th and 6th gear have a taller final drive than gears 1-4.

Highly dubious math-skills combined with a sense of mission bordering on walk-on-water always makes me sad for this waste of oxygen ...

Any calculation of premium percentages must be made on the cost of the whole car, not that of the option alone. The value of a renovation on your house is meaningless on the basis of the cost of that reno alone rather than what it does to the total value of the house.

Regarding resale, now that this car is available at a lower price I would think the value of existing Jetta Sedan TDIs just fell. Between getting a full warranty along with any rebates or financing incentives available, the new car will look more attractive to many buyers than a fairly new but used TDI at a similar price.

I think that problem already exists. Most of the newer used TDIs around here are going for about what you should be able to bargin a brand new one down to. For the same money, I would always go with the brand new one and a full warranty.

Finally !

This is great news. Finally a TDI that is very near my basic '01 with it's manual windows and base trim. Better since I've reached the point to go with an automatic . . . been clutching for 40 some years . . . and that's the only real option.

I really like a sedan body but have been looking at Golf 4-doors to get the cloth seats. I don't need the hotter driving of a Golf and would really like keeping trunk space WITHOUT the fake leather, sun roof, and other stuff that are no value or comfort to me.

As for the higher TDI price compared to a basic gasser . . . gasser MPG is always below EPA, TDI MPG is always at or well above EPA. Get enough miles and the extra engine cost is worth it and that's not counting the fun of driving a TDI. Overall price of a 2014 Value TDI with DSG is only a few thousand more then the '01 5-speed was in yr-2000.

So if I can get past the cheap plastic dash and confirm this model has the important stuff like 4 disc brakes (VW site Compare page says yes). Then my two plus year fight to find something as near the '01 TDI may have ended.

= =
'01 at 167,000 miles still get 48+ MPG compared :), 51-52 HWY

Rear disc brakes were included in all Jetta sedans starting sometime in 2013. And in 2014 all Jetta sedans have independent rear suspension.

And I agree on the simple car. I love my '02 with crank windows, manual mirrors, and no sunroof.

Discussion about resale tends not to be valid. All cars depreciate significantly in the first 3 years. If you put alot of miles on, the depreciation is even more. So who cares about what trim level you have, or whether you have a NAV system (totally worthless in my opinion, since most driving is done within 50 miles of your home). You want a basic car with cloth, wind-up windows, manual tramsmission, look at Honda/Toyota stripped down models. But don't complain about noise, comfort or appearance.

I have a base model Golf TDI (O.K., It's a '99.5):)
Sorry, but I'm spoiled by the power windows, and heated leather seats, Premium sound system (etc.) that my wrecked (and still sitting in the yard) Beetle had......
That being said, I don't have 22K to spend on a new car(although, when I tried to start the Golf early this morning in the 6ºF. weather, the started made no sound whatsoever) :( - Drove my Wife's Honda to work......
