2013 TDI wagon 6MT pothole hit
New to the forum so I apologize if this is posted in the wrong thread to ask something like this. To put a long story short(ish), I have a 2013 TDI 6 speed that’s hit a pothole already. I get this vibration and chattering at 2k rpm but at no other time. It doesn’t discriminate between gears and only does it under load at ~50% throttle or above and does seem to increase in intensity based on the throttle slightly. Above 2k rpm no noises, no vibrations, nothing even on WOT. Car drives fine and pulls strong w/ no slipping, clutch was replaced ~158k miles (currently at 215k) and goes into gear easily. No audible clunking at idle like a failing DMF. I’ve been scratching my head trying to see if someone has had the same issue on a manual MK6 TDI but to no avail. I do not know if it is of relevance, but timing was done 3k miles ago, and the fuel filter was just changed today with no evidence of metal shavings in the element. My buddy seems to write it off as normal TDI noises, but I had a 2011 TDI with a 6 speed with pothole damage as well and I don’t recall it ever doing this. Any help is appreciated! Really not trying to fire the parts cannon at it.

Common for cars with a tune that has max torque that the hardware allows, usually stage 2 and above. It usually occurs under full throttle 50% may indicate the springs on the DMF are weaker than normal. The recommendation is to "drive around it". In other words don't go wot in the rpms that it happens. The springs can only take so much torque.

That’s what I’ve been kind of doing is shifting where I think changing into the next gear would fall over 2k. I bought it tuned and I do believe it’s stage 2 or higher. Is it inherently dangerous to hit this RPM? And it sounds like the remedy would be an upgraded clutch kit?

Obviously it will eventually fail, how long no one knows for sure. It is very easy to shift at higher rpms so they stay above 2500. Your clutch should be fine with that few miles given the previous owner didn't abuse it (excessive slipping when taking off in 1st gear). They can last 250,000+mi. The DMF is what will need to be replaced they don't last as long as the clutch.

Not sure if you are still having issues or if this will be useful. I have a 2012 TDI 6 speed, 2 stage tuned. I bought the car about 2 years ago and would notice the same issue you described and it was very noticeable. However, over time the intensity of the chattering seemed to decrease and I had to be a lot heavier on the pedal for it to happen. Fast-forward to about a week ago and and my clutch goes to the floor and doesn't come back up (156k miles)... A lot of money later the car has a new performance clutch, single mass fly wheel and both cylinders. The chattering is now WAY more intense and happens with even being kinda easy on the pedal. I had a very knowledgeable machanic do the clutch system and he was not alarmed by any noise when he test drove it. I am starting to think it may just be a tuned TDI thing but I'm not an expert by any means.

I hate to tell you this but you will soon be looking for transmission parts or a new transmission. After my single mass flywheel install my 3rd gear sycro was immediately rattling like crazy and failed 1500 miles later. had the sycro replaced and about 3K miles later the input shaft bearing failed and allowed the input shaft to cock sideways and take out the trans housing= new transmission for me..... and they are not easy to come by.

Was the noise just happening in 3rd gear or all gears?

I have a single mass flywheel clutch with over 55k miles on it. No issues and still shifts like butter. I've heard the horror stories but I often wonder if this was limited to a certain clutch that was available at that time?

Good to hear it's still going strong. I had a very knowledgeable machanic do the job and I took his recommendation for the single mass. He said his wife drives the same car and was even teaching me about the CP4 fuel pump issues that are so dreaded and potential prevention kits. So, I would imagine he was well aware of the single mass issue.
