So, having problems with my FHN gearbox, long story, changing to an EEN tranny. What problems will I be facing? Will the ECM need to be recoded due to the differant gear ratios? It has a Malone tune. Also what pilot bearing are people using?

The B7 2.0T pilot bearing is a good choice for a BHW as it's longer than the B5 1.8T one.

Cant help at all, but I bought mine EEN swapped and I see 2800 rpm at around 80 mph with stock size tires.

good luck with the swap

Once you get it in see if the cruise control works. There's I believe a 10% error allowed by the ECU on the RPM vs speed. If it does work no need for a reflash. If it doesn't then it's time to reflash if you want cruise control

Caffiene, do you have a part number for the pilot bearing?

Can anybody tell me what the FHN does for rpm at 80 mph with stock tires? I am wondering if it is within thenten % that pickle mentioned. Maybe it would have to within 5%, 5 plus or minus making ten.

Looking at old threads, a conversation between VWZIPS and 50harleyrider showed:

EEN: 2700 rpm @ 80mph (3.70 R&P)
FHN: 2450 rpm @ 80mph (3.44 R&P....?)

so right around that 10%, so prolly too close to call without installing and checking to see if cruise works as mentioned above. I’d error on the side of it won’t......

3.7 minus 3.44 over 3.44 times 100 equals 7.55%
Sweet!! Your math must be better!! Not sure if 5th gear is the same....

I just did 2450/2700 = .9 - 1.0 = .1 or 10%

snark remark is not my intention if it’s taken that way.

Further comparison, 5th times final drive.

Fhn---3.44x .686= 2.359
EEN---3.70x.683= 2.527

Percent differance is 7.1% So maybe

Ok, update and a few thoughts:

The EEN bought on ebay from Spain arrived nine days from ordering.

I did not remove the clutch since it was new. The tranny slipped right in, easiest install ever. I think because of the perfect alighment.

Woo hoo, the cruise works. The shifting is silky smooth.

The clutch setup is a LUK dual mass flywheel, with M-pact 6 ceramic puck disc and pressure plate. It was around 500 bucks. About 2000 miles on the setup. It is slightly grabby on startup but not too bad. It seems to hold the stage two power. The puck disc is supposed to hold 30 to 40 percent more torque so they say. They also have stiiffer pressure plates available. Mine feels normal.

Because of the dual mass thesetup just seems smoother. The 18 1900 delete vibrations seem gone. I like it.

So, FHN tranny for sale. It looks good with the back case removed. Needs a synchro, this one was in 3 pieces.

Franz sold me the Valeo single mass flywheel setup. It was nice and smooth shifting. He said it would hold a stage two tune and it has. Would sell.

On too the next problem car. I bought a 2005 passat sedan for 800. The body and the interior very nice, decent tires, no oil pressure when reving. I just finished installing a used auto tranny into my B5.5 wagon. It seems good, no codes. I have five B5.5s, 4 tdis and a 4mo. Maybe tooo many cars. Also a 96 Celica and a nice 98 A4 2.8 Audi quatro

How do you like the EEN ratios vs the FHN?

Mine (EEN) is still buzzy at 2k and below. So I try to drive at 2200 and above when under load. I also wanna raise my idle to 1k as that is much smoother.

When switching from an FHN to an EEN gearbox, you may need to recode the ECM due to different gear ratios, especially with the Malone tune. Check for fitment issues with mounts and driveshafts, and ensure you use the pilot bearing specific to the EEN gearbox. You might also need to recalibrate the speedometer and verify transmission mount compatibility.

CantWrite, I find I prefer the EEN. I would say less than five percent of my driving is on the freeway doing 80. That is about 2750 rpm. Most is local highway driving at 50 t0 70 mph. where the revs are more suitable above 2000 with the EEN.
Interestingly, from my very limlted research, the FHN was only used in the very early years in the B5. VW apparently thought lower geared trannys like the EEN were a better fit. Cosequently there are very few FHNs for sale used, and many more EENs etc.
As to the vibrations below 2000 rpm, it seems the dual mass flywheel has really smoothed that out.
