Happy Thanksgiving NM TDIers.
You're right, glowplugs are not a stock item. Santa Fe VW wanted $37 each. I finally just ordered them online from tdiparts.com. They had a special, 4 Beru glowplugs for $59.95. I'll install them next weekend.

Just did my 2nd Timing Belt Change. The first was on the black jetta 2 wks ago. Did one on the white jetta today. Took me about 8 hrs but no major problems. Timing checked with vagcom... timing = 71, fuel temp = 96. Had 87K miles on old belt. Still looked good. Serpentine belt was getting bad though. Replaced all idler pullies, tensioner, water pump. Will tackle brakepads tomorrow along with oil and filter change.

Important item:

ALWAYS check the oil part number on your invoice after having the dealership do an oil change. After two years of doing it right, some moron at University put Castrol Syntec into BOTH of our TDIs in the last couple of weeks. I only discovered it this morning.

The correct part numbers are ZVW-352-167-QDSP or G-052-167-A2 (this second one is what UVW has been using since we've gone there).

I'm taking the Beetle in tomorrow and demanding a change on the spot. You are your only advocate against newbies in the oil change bay who don't know a TDI from a left-handed monkey wrench.

EDIT: the parts mgr at UVW showed me the barrel with 505.01 and said they changed suppliers and now they only have one part number for all oil. I am not so worried now, though that seems like a totally screwy system to me. How do they know when they're about to run out of one or the other? And how many customers come back in, panicked, to complain about getting the wrong oil? (None, from the looks on their faces.)

One more here in the NE heights.

Anybody have any comments positive or negative about the service center @ University Volkswagen?

We've never taken ours anywhere else (is there anywhere else?) and we have always had good service. Once, they had to replace a door lock switch (warranty) and the window didn't want to roll up smoothly. I took it back and they fixed it on the spot.

My only real complaint is that oil issue. They now label ALL the oil they use as Syntec 502.00, even if they put in the correct 505.01 for PD diesels. So, you have no way to check whether they treated your diesel right on an oil change. But that's it. They've done well by us over the last two years, with two TDIs.

Good and bad...I just go there for warranty work and to get the right oil with their receipt, just in case.

Sorry I've been absent. I got busy and did some major work (front axles and ball bearings) without even inviting anyone to come hlep me curse, see http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?p=1961734#post1961734.

Hi bikeproof

jkenny, I'm in Los Alamos and I will be interested in a TB change in another 40K or about another year, hope you are still around

I'm the recent proud owner of a new front wheel ball bearing press from harbor freight, already broken and repaired. If any one is interested, we can follow the same arrangement autozone has for renting tools, $80 cash or paypal, all returned when tool returned.

I got my car aligned at Expert Tires in Santa Fe, $45

I bought an Audi S6 Avant........... Too many horses in the stable... I guess the GN or the '31 should have went, in hindsight..!!!!!

It's got Nittos on it, never really ran slicks, otherwise - probably a mid - 11 sec. car..??? I've put a whopping 500 miles on it since... ... 2004..!!! So, I keep race gas in it for the most part... no idea what the mileage is.. wanna buy it..??? LOL

I can suggest Turtle Mountain for the GTG, but things are HECTIC for me right now to put anything together.. Job has been keeping me busy 60+ hours a week... it sucks..

As luck would have we are having issues with our TDI now!!! Anyone in the ABQ/RR area have a vag com they would be willing rent etc to scan our TDI? I refuse to take our car to UVW due to past experiences with them, but I think the timing may be off on it. I tried PM'ing rustwagen but haven't gotten a response yet, maybe someone might have his number? Anyway thanks in advance. Romi

open question for new mexican TDi owners...

Greetings folks - I currently live on the east coast and don't drive a TDi yet, but hope to be remedying both those situations soon and may be arriving in ABQ with my wife this summer. As we've noticed there seem to be a lot more used TDi's available out hereabouts, we've been shopping to potentially find one before our potential move...

...one thing I'm wondering, what do you folks think about leather seats?

Personally I'm not a big fan, because I always seem to find them uncomfortable both in extreme heat and extreme cold. Any of you want to chime in with an opinion about this in an ABQ climate? A couple of the cars we've found have them and one can only be but so picky, after all not all that many people ever part with something as awesome as a TDi! :)

Muchas gracias, in advance, and hope to pass some of you on old Route 66 someday!

We have two TDIs, both with leather seats. My wife's previous car had leather, too. We like it! It's really nice in the winter (esp. if you get seat heaters!) and it's not as bad in the summer as you think. Yes, it's hotter than cloth, but nothing like plastic.

By the way, we don't have really extreme heat or cold in Albuquerque. The lows are typically around 20F, occasionally down to 15F, and the highs are generally mid-90s in the summer, occasionally approaching 98F (and dry!). If you live in Buffalo or Atlanta, you're going the find the awful season no worse than where you are now, and the other season much better, and with less snow or humidity in any case. Come on out!

None presently, have owned VW TDI's since my first in 2000
I lived in Sierra Los Pinos in the Jemez last year ( June 07-July 07) and am now temporarily back in NH. We'll be moving back to the Jemez mid to end of next year, I hope...miss the nice weather and green chilis!
Of course, my trusty 02 Golf will be coming with me :)

one more question for new mexican TDi owners...

Thanks everyone for the leather seat feedback! Much appreciated. One more thing I've been wondering about the Albuquerque area, what's the availability of biodiesel there like? Do any of you folks run biodiesel in your TDi? Any biodiesel or other fueling-related experiences from the greater ABQ area that you wanna share?

We find out whether we're moving there later this week, and could be TDi shopping as soon as next weekend - very excited out here in Virginia right now. :)
