TDI
tdi's ranging 2000 golf to 2006 jetta 7 in total:)
2006 jetta tdi with some really weird stuff going on.
starts with the cig lighter quitting (dash can quits)
then heater stops
followed by power windows, power mirrors, signal lights, remote trunk and gas door.
things have progressed and if one continues driving the engine will
eventually die and power steering is also lost at that time long with brake
lights. its hard to believe that so many systems die in a cascade of failures!
you would think the engineers would put a little more value on the importance
of the brake lights when the engine fails!
i checked codes doing a full scan and with the command start connected the list is longer but with it now removed to narrow down the issue
it has come down to this scan. although a longer drive might have resulted in more faults. seems the hotter the day outside the faster the faults pile up.
here is the cut n p of the scan:

Try cleaning all the grounds in the engine space (and I mean all of them) and 12VDC power buss and fusible link connections on the forward face of the engine space power relay box.

where is this : ??
02403 - Terminal 15 for Interior
006 - Short to Plus

I assume the central electrics is responsible for shutting stuff down. how does it know what to shut down? could this be an issue with the k line somewhere along its path?

I am at a loss as to where to even start.
I had an experience where a deer hit a headlight (or was it the headlight hit the deer) it shorted out the wiring and that circuit was shut down until the code was cleared
is its like something is telling central electrics that there are shorts all over the place and its shutting things down?

one more thing! there is a persistent fault with the pass side door that doesnt clear all the time. could this be the the troublesome wiring in the door jam causing all this on one side of the other??

how and where could one short to ground effect so many systems??
matt

How: one ground fault can cause multiple system failure just by making one module malfunction. It pulls the others down with it. It's not a remote possibility and happens here and there if you car to search the web for similar situations.

Where: you probably have a chafed wiring harness somewhere. That's where I would start looking. The door is an excellent place to start.

A bad ground is something that could be in common with all the faults you have. On the 2006 BRM, there is a major chassis ground that works loose underneath the air cleaner box that could cause most if not all of your problems.

Pull the air box and look for an acorn nut that bolts 2 wires to the chassis.

I would not blame VW engineers for your lack of keeping up on proper maintenance.

i will check that out. gut feeling that this isnt where the issue is though.

Clean every ground in the engine bay, & under the plenum shield along with the 12VDC+ connections & fuses on the front end of the engine fuse box.

did all of the above as well as disconnecting the aftermarket remote starter and same thing happened. seems temp related! its getting colder here and it takes much longer for the problem to show up.

Have you already checked the door wiring harness inside the boot, driver's door? Very common place for shorts, broken wires, etc.

yes check inside the boots on both sides. i was really expecting to see a problem in the drivers door but nothing.

I doubt this could be it but easy to check. Earlier Jetta could get coolant into the wiring harness via the level sensor on the coolant tank. This ruined the harness and caused all sorts of problems. To check just unplug level sensor at coolant tank and see if fluid is collecting there. Also I assumed you checked for wear of the wiring harness when you cleaned the grounds.

yes that was one of the first things i checked because of all the weird stuff happening with this car i almost expected it to have the coolant problem but no its dry

worked on this car a bunch more today and swapped out the other 460 realy and that made no change. opened up the floor area on the pass side front and checked the grounds there they were all good. one thing to note the signal light leds in the pass side mirror had been very dim all the time. i checked the wiring to the door and its all good and doing so didnt change the dim mirror signal light. while i was under there i wiggled the wiring going to the heater fan and the fan speed resistor and bingo! the pass side turn signal is bright again! another note these problems only show their face when the car has warmed up and been driven for an hour or more once its warm it can be worked on to try to find the problem. so unsure if things just cooled off when i wiggled the heater wires and that caused it to work rite again or if it cooled off...

Did you check the ccm connections. The module is just behind the glove box.

this makes more sense !
since i was moving the wiring around that connects
to the heater fan and the fan resistor it likely moved the ccm wiring as well
i will check that next. seems since i moved the wiring around at the fan the weird issues haven't shown up..

so i removed the glove box and messed around with the wires going to
what ever that box is behind the glove box and i am convinced the problem
isnt here.
had a chance to talk to a long time vw mechanic and he figures its the j539
or what he called the vehicle electronic control module which is under the steering column . yet to get into this item.
kind of wondering if this is a part that can be pulled from a wreck and
swapped in to see if it fixes the problem with out having to be coded to the
car.

doing some searching on the forum it would appear that the module under the column is the steering control module .
could this be the issue causing the weird problems.
leave it to the vw mechanic to come out with an idea that is totally wrong?

Please Please Please come back here and post up what you find. It is so frustrating reading through a whole post about the same problem you are having and find out the OP never came back to update on his findings and what fixed the problem.

Not to sidetrack but I am having a similar problem but my post is not getting the traffic that yours is. I am getting the drivers side door open and closing on its own with no rhyme or reason. Replaced drivers side door harness and all door control modules on all four doors along with the drivers side twice. And still the same problem.

And to you most recent post I believe the mechanic should have said the central convenience module that is located behind the glove box. The one you were messing with. I do not think the steering control module would affect all of the things that are going on with your car.

have you changed the latch assembly in the drivers door? seems to me
that its likely the micro switches in the mechanism. no?

Okay! So maybe I am misspeaking on the items that were replaced. I thought that the door latches were actually the door control modules. So all four "door latches" have been replaced. Unfortunately I will be taking it to the dealer today and see if they can bend me over backwards and narrow down what may be causing this. Thanks though

As far as I recall, A5 door latches don't contain micro switches, unlike A4. They instead have a cheap, non-servo type, motor for un/locking.

have you had any luck with this issue?
i have changed the module under the steering column as well as the signal light lever and the dim pass side mirror signal is still dim.
if driven more and more stuff shuts off.
no idea what to try next. i am thinking of plugging in a door off a parts car to the pass side and seeing if the dim mirror signal remains .
thing is if i bang around the area of the signal light lever the led in the
mirror will sometimes get brighter for a split second..

Nope I have not gotten anywhere. I took it to the dealer and wasted 65 dollars as they programmed my key instead of doing what I asked (long story). After complaining long enough they invited me back down to have a look at it for free, after I got there the car was acting completely normal. So they took the car to the back of the shop and I went and waited in the break room. After about 35 minutes the manager comes and gets me and says can you come out here and speak to the tech that is working on your car. I said absolutely that's what I wanted this whole time. So after speaking to the tech he states I am the electrical guru here and I cannot get it to act up. So after talking to him for ten minutes, telling him everything I have already done he unplugs his VCDS (yes factory dealership using VCDS I didn't think they used this) and closes the door the damn thing starts flashing open door from the MFD display. So he plugs VCDS back in and goes to the controller and it is showing that the door is opening and closing and that the computer is registering it every time it does this even though the door is closed. He tells me that he doesn't know what to do. He states that he would have done everything that I have already done. Door Harness, clean all grounds in the engine bay, door latch mechanisms. And that the only thing that I have not done to check would be that there is a ground behind the kick panel on the drivers side that he knows can be problematic or to replace the control module under the steering wheel or the window regulator that has a door control module connected to it. So that is where I stand. I have not had time to dig into this any further but I will def be back here to update if I do end up finding out what the cause is. I have been leaning more to the module that is connected to the window regulator as there is no rhyme or reason for the way it is acting. Its not like a hard bump or closing a door changes the way it acts. It just does it completely on its own. I drive an hour to work everyday and there is just absolutely no consistency. And I am sorry I don't mean to derail your problems on your post.

Forgot to state that the guys at Ross Tech have been helpful in stating that the would look into modules #42 and #52 which have been known to be problematic.
