Catch Can, Updated

A while back, I decided I wanted to install a catch can. Here's my post install from that:

Well, since then I had upgraded to the larger H8 battery, so my nifty bracket couldn't work the way it was in the photo above (tucked behind the battery "walls") so I had to modify it. Without the walls available, I ended up using some super adhesive zip tie brackets on the side of the battery at the top and bottom, then utilized the ties to hold the bracket to the battery. It worked for a while. I was under the hood the other day and noticed that the adhesive had lost it's grab, so the bracket and can were kind of just resting on the coolant hose. No bueno.

So I had to come up with a different solution for mounting, so I figured I'd post up. If you have a stock battery, you could mount it the original way I had it in the link above and be done with it. But if you ever decide to do the battery mod, some of them will be large enough the walls and top mount for the fuses won't fit.

First off, I had a couple of requests (@NewTdi) to know how much oil the catch can actually would catch.

Original post/install was June 19, 2020
When I re-did the setup yesterday, 8/20/21:

Maybe a tablespoon or so over the course of that time, not much at all.

So here's the new setup. I figured I would utilize brackets sliding UNDER the battery, and use the weight of the battery and the battery clamp hold down to my advantage.

A couple of angle brackets (Lowes) with the legs cut to size, drilled through (M6 button head cap screw), with an actual tank mounting bracket spanning and bolted to the brackets. Gives the brackets more rigidity too.

Here's the bracket I used:

Mounted in it's new home:

Hoses attached (had to cut a new hose because the length on the old one didn't quite work, and my old fitting didn't want to come out of the other one, although I could have sliced it with a blade):

I did something a bit different with the hoses this time too. Since the bottom one kind of rests on the valve cover, the top one would sag onto it, which put a bit of strain on the fitting into the grommet (where the puck normally goes). I think over time that led to the grommet actually cracking. So I had some leftover air line, and cut it to the length where it took the stress off the grommet. Hold it all with a zip tie. Old trick I learned for keeping mtb hoses spaced apart:

Finally, the system all plumbed in:

Just wanted to give an update if anyone found themselves with the H8 battery and needed a mounting solution

I have a similar setup, same can and plumbing. My grommet at the valve cover likes to split

Good to know I'm not the only one. I ordered a few from IDparts the other day. I used a bit smaller diameter fitting this time and cut the bottom arrow/head portion off of it so it is a smooth shank. I also cut the fitting off before it goes "into" the valve cover so as not to stress the portion that grabs into the lip of the cover. We'll see if it holds up a bit better this time

I just cleaned mine up real well, then siliconed the crap out of it. Just to get me by for now.

Mine was completely split down the side, vertically. I don't think silicone would have held up for me. But, the can is doing its job!

Mine definitely is, mine was 1/4 full. What's failing on mine is the lip that goes inside the valve cover is splitting along the edge, so it leaks.

How long did it take you for yours to fill up 1/4? I had very little after a year and some change (photo above).

Is it splitting because the barb is going down past the lip into the valve cover (essentially squeezing the lip against the sharp wall of the aluminum opening)? That's what I did differently with this fitting, hacked it to length so it only sat in the grommet and stopped short of that lip.

I actually think it's splitting because the hose might be a tad too short. It filled up that much in about 4 months. My engine may be a little tired.

Mine is about the same. I didn't make any fancy brackets or anything, I just mounted it directly onto the radiator support.
