Has anyone ever attempted or heard of anyone attempting to change the stock oil filter to a screw on oil filter?

Why? OEM work well, easy to find, and are cheap.

Sounds messy. There is an oil cooler integrated into the filter housing- I wouldn't want to get rid of that.

I will second what turbobrick said. That housing performs several key functions and it is not a weak point.
Now the fuel filter is a whole other story.....
