CAT 2 Micron Fuel Filter Kits New Design

Well we have made another change to the Cat filter head. The troublesome thermostatic tee hole now has the leading edge chaffered with a 60* bevel. With the o-rings lubed they push right in without any effort at all.

Also the new tee hold down brackets are laser cut instead of punched like before. What this does is allow us to get any size hole we want instead of settling on a hole that’s to small or to big. So the hole for the tee is now bigger but not to big to make a loose fit.

After selling over a 1000 of these kits you would thought that these changes would have been made long ago. But there are times that it takes someone else to see what can be changed.

Even though metal and transportation costs have go through the roof we are still going to hold them to $115 plus shipping. But next batch will have to go up a bit.

You can order one at the link below.

I have been thinking about getting one of these for a while now. Other than the fact that the filters don't need to be changed as often, what are the major benefits? i am assuming that better filtering(2 micron) = better fuel getting to your engine = cleaner/longer lasting engine? Are there performace or MPG gained from this at all as well?

Thanks in advance

A-mark. you said it all. yes! it is a worth while piece of equipment. and to the last question,;NO, you just get superior filtration, not a gain in performance.

Is there any chance that we can send in the "older" model and you can have this new change made for the o-rings? (I'm assuming this would cost something) or will we just need to purchase a new unit if we desire this change?

There is no definitive answer; there is a wide range of opinion. Doing the math, the filter would be good for 100,000 miles in our application (compared to the types of machinery and volume of fuel these filters would typically see).

Many people go to 30 or 40 thousand miles. I prefer to change mine once a year, heading into winter, regardless of mileage (though it's generally about ~25k miles). I'm sure I could go much longer/further, but filters are cheap, and changing them out is easy maintenance.

All you need to do is get a 60* counter sink bit and use a drill press. If you are good you could use a hand drill.

Mostly, longer lasting injectors.

They are also MUCH cheaper. Around 1/3 the price for the filter elements.

And now the $64,000 question....

Is this the final solution to tighten up the connections and prevent any air leaks? I'd love to go with the CAT filter, but let's face it... up until now, this has not been a fool-proof mod. Sure, tons of people had no install problems. But some did. Some say it's the design, others blame installation technique. Both were probably valid.

If this modification to the filter head is the best solution, I'll buy one for sure. I'm eager to hear other's experience with this new redesign.

I'd be interesting in hearing some feedback about the new design too. I'm thinking of going with one of these next time I change my fuel filter too.

Just put the micron fillter on the lil jewel on Tues7/18/07. I think it took the mechanic about 15 minutes. I'm loving it right now. In 20,000-+ I'll unscrew it and change it out. I'd say it's almost idiot proof...that's for me...

Can anyone else speak about the new redesign?? How did your install go?
The install is more or less the same. Its just that a couple of things were changed to make it easier to install the tee.

Ordered! Looking forward to it, Greg, and I'm sure my PD injectors will thank you. Just out of curiosity, will this fit in the 10-pounds-of-ALH-in-a-7-pound-engine-compartment of a NB?

...and it's in.

I broke my original thermostatic tee installing this kit. This is not because of the design of the system, it is because I am a troglodyte that had a 2 pound copper hammer too nearby.

The chamfered hole in the filter head allowed the replacement thermostatic tee w/new o-rings to easily slide right in. The new clip easily holds the tee in very securely. I replaced the lines between my fuel rails and filter in my Golf with 5/16" ID biodiesel resistant translucent line and I have no air in my system at all.

Make sure you have two strap wrenches onhand and this shouldn't take you more than half an hour to install. Half an hour well spent, however - your injectors will thank you!

Pardon my ignorance...but does the CAT 2micron filter have a water separator and drain valve ?

Is there a need ?

Thanks...
the cat filter does not have the water drain on the bottom.

Typically if you have a problems with water in your fuel, you need to find a better place to buy fuel. With water in the fuel will have bigger problems such as Algae, or other microbes that will clog a fuel filter quickly.

in 20+ years of driving diesels, I have yet to find water in the seperator.

I did not find any last time I drained my fuel filter either....

BUt what if there is some water , and all you got is a Cat 2 micron filter. Would it separate out the water ? ....There must be some scenario that made Mahle, and Hengst, and OEM, have a water separator..? Just wondering ...?
Why did the other makers have a water drain valve on the bottom ?

Thanks for any replies....

I still have 2 Meyle fuel filters.... then I am thinking about getting the Cat 2 micron filter...

Is there a version that fits a 2006.5 A5 Jetta? The filter and mount are different. And there is no thermostatic tee.

I'm gonna hijack the thread slightly....for a possible idea:

I wonder if people would be interested in a CAT head with a thermostatic tee delete, ie:
- No hole for the tee
- "Bypass" barb to connect the return lines.

...maybe if you completely bypass the thermostatic tee, then you don't need to worry about air leaks.

Sounds like something I would like with in lieu of the CAT filter I currently have.

Would this mod have any effect on fueling a vehicle in -20*F winter here in Northern Illinois? I was under the impression that 2 of the 4 lines on top of the fuel filter had something to do with the heating of the fuel.

the return line from the injection pump that goes into the input of the thermostatic tee. The excess fuel would heat up the fuel filter in the winter time.

Bypassing the thermostatic tee would mean the fuel filter is no longer heated.

Hi Greg,
I just ordered up CAT filter kit for my PD(BEW). Looking forward to getting it and installing it. Now that I have been RC'ed (1+) I think cleaner fuel will keep my injectors happier. I also splurged and bought DG's oil bypass filter kit as well. Cant wait to get both installed and take pics.

Thanks to all the vendors who provide us with these innovative products, it makes this site invaluable to true gearheads and novices alike, myself included.
