Hello,

I often see Castrol Edge 5W40 oil for cheap at Canadian tire. I see it is rated only 505.00 not 505.01. Not sure if it is the same as the stuff idparts sells in the US called Castrol Edge turbo diesel that seems fine. Anyone know if it is ok for PD engines? Anyone use it?

It says fully synthetic and that it was formerly syntec. I think they just changed the name. It is confusing...

I think the Mobil 1 Delvac is the oil to use from Canadian tire - supposed to be very good..if the Edge is usable you should source it from Costco...I think the price is much better

That is not the correct oil.

Castrol DOES have a product that IS the correct stuff. Volkswagen dealers can get it, the part number is G052167M2 and is a proper 505.01 compliant 5w40 oil.

Ya it is weird. The old stuff called syntec 5w40 was rated 505.01. Then they changed the name to Edge and now it says only 505.00. I guess it is best to avoid it.

Thanks.

I have never seen a Syntec that was 5w40 505.01 rated. Only TXT, which they stopped carrying around 2006.

otty, I noticed yesterday that partsource carries a 505.1 rated total oil, 5w30 as well as a 505.1 "listed" oil by redline. I doubt redline actually paid for the certificaiton and is just saying its equivalent, but i would trust redline either way.

Theres also the option of using rotella t6. There are enough guys that there is millions of KMs run on pds with rotella with no adverse effects.

right now, canadian tire has the 5 gallon pail of rotella on sale, plus the shell rebate on top of that
