Car shaking at idle.

I have noticed that the engine shakes the car once it has warmed up. It doesn't seem to do it all of the time but I do have this symptom a lot. The tach needle does not fluctuate but you can feel car shake. Any ideas?

Yes, it still shakes when I depress the clutch and I have a new SMF and Clutch. I think that it might be a bad motor mount because the engine seems to be moving around a lot at idle.

Hi,
First of all
1. Have your car scanned for fault codes with VCDS.
2. Check your torsion value in measuring blocks 4, syncho angle should be 0-1.0
3. Check your idle stabilization MB 13 for injetor units that are out of specs.

Keep us updated ;)

I believe that I solved my problem. TOO MUCH OIL. I changed my oil 500 miles after my cam replacement. I drained the oil and added 4 liters. I have driven about 900 miles since then and I checked my oil level and it was too high. I drained the oil to get back into the middle level and no more shaking.

Happy for you man :)

however, i think i'm missing something here. Does your oil level rised "by it self" during the 900 miles you did !?

If so, i think that your injector o'ring seals need to be replaced.

Cheers Mohamed.

Okay I still have this problem going on. I replied earlier that I thought that too much oil was causing this issue and that was not the case. The reason the oil was too high was because I cannot read the dipstick on the BRM but I am going to fix that with some white paint this weekend.

I have used multiple brands of Diesel and this doesn't affect the hard idle that I am experiencing.

Again, the car idles fine when cold. It is only after the car warms up that the hard idle with shake the car. Performance or MPG is not affected and otherwise drives perfectly.
I have been averaging around 42 mpg on 50/50 city/highway driving with a Malone 1.5 tune.

I don't have access to VCDS so I am unable to check the items suggested above.

Any other suggestions or should I just take my car to my mechanic and have him take a look at it.

Thanks,
Shannon

if you turn on the a/c does the shaking stop? I've read some stuff about a bad alternator clutch pully dragging and causing the slow down... something to do with using the extra current running the a/c bumps up idle..

Hi Shannon,

Are you experiencing hard/difficult engine start ?
Do you have any white smoke from the exhaust when you crank/start your engine ?

Regards,
Mohamed.

Nope. Starts very quickly.
No smoke.

I only get this hard idle/shaking after I drive the car 15 minutes or more. The car otherwise drives great and has a lot of power.

I haven't tried this but the idle is not slowing down and doesn't fluctuate. The car only shakes at idle after I drive the car for 15 minutes or more.

My 2001 Golf does the same thing except it does it hot or cold and it has since i got the car in October. I have been thinking my clutch flywheel was out of balance but cant be sure, .. otherwise the car is fine and drives nicely but in some cases i feel the pulses from the engine kind of strong. My clutch doesnt slip at all and i hate to replace the clutch as it was done by the previous owner and should have lots of life left on it

I hope you figure this out and the answer works for my car too

I know that this is an older thread but I recently had alot of engine shaking…. It ended up being my idler pulley. I had replaced it when I had done the last timing belt as well. It was keeping the belt tight around the alternator and compressor BUT the spring was weak…?! So it was shaking enough to fray the drive belt…Hope this helps.

Had this problem on my CBEA and after I replaced my transmission (damaged casing, unrelated to the shaking) it randomly went away. The flywheel is still new.
