Having trouble staying connected to BEW cars.

hex-can interface with windows 8.1 ... trouble with more than a few of cars.

Anyone else having this problem?

Tried full shut down and restart of the computer.

Here is the basic problem.
I can get a response and get the connection to the engine controller but the failure will occur when trying to do something like a basic settings procedure, log while driving, etc...some sort of activity.

I had this problem once before about a year ago with BEW ECUs and it was cured with a hard reboot of my computer. This time it does not help and I am using a different computer.

Change the power profile on your laptop to Performance mode. This will prevent the hard drive and/or usb from going to sleep.

Thanks, I will try that.
It seemed to get better when I turned off the internet, and McAffee.

I had a similar problem and it was fixed by downloading the latest version of VCDS.

Mine was also acting flaky but since hitting the restore default button on the Options menu I haven't lost contact when clearing DTC's.

I'm also using a tablet with windows 8.1, Hex+can cable on 2004 BEW. Need to try the power mode suggestion.

No problems with ALH, just the BEW. Been in touch with Ross-Tech.

I am running VCDS 15.7

I selected Energy Manager High Performance mode. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks, everyone.

How do you change the power profile on a lap top? On my older lap top, an HP Pavilion had to be plugged in for it to stay connected. So far my current Toshiba does fine on it's own power.

It's a setting in WhinDuhs, not the hardware. Basically, you are telling WhinDuhs not to shoot it's own crotch . . . Laptop power profiles typically slow things way down when unplugged, to save battery, but it's all adjustable.

Because....??
I've seen it act like a bull in a china shop. Nothing against bulls mind you. Norton is no better IMHO. There are known issues of those two causing problems with VCDS, but generally with the install from what I know.

I use the basic antivirus software from Microsoft and have no issues. But flip side, I use two methods of virus protection... the second one is my computers are FULL of porn, thus, no room for any viruses. When I want to install new software, I just delete the correct amount of porn to make room for the new software. This method has been very effective for the last +20 years for me. Added benefit, I'm moving up the ranks in the Arm Wrestling League of Knoxville.

Also, this may be helpful for some people as well:

USB suspend setting

That may explain irritating interruptions I experience for the first few minutes after opening the lid to work. I will be typing away and the window will become inactive while something else is being done behind the scenes.
