Can you use a monsoon HU without the amp?

Hey guys,

Say you have a non-monsoon car, and can get a monsoon headunit.

Can you recode the hu to operate in non-monsoon mode? Or will it only work with the separate amp?

TIA!

I know the double-din units will work just fine, not sure about the single-DIN. If you find an answer, please shoot me a PM - it would make my hunt for a replacement radio for the GF's B5 a LOT easier.

I think you're right; there is no difference between the monsoon and non-monsoon headunit. It is simply a matter of coding. I had a headunit replaced on warranty a while ago and it just never sounded rights. Turns out that it was coded for a non-monsoon car; logged in with a friends 1552, changed the code from the Ross-Tech website and it worked fine. As for the after-market amp question, I'm at a loss.

Ok, cool. The statement about the amp was to find out if one would need to be fitted to install the Monsoon HU, something I do not want to do.

When the HU is coded for non monsoon mode, do you still get the MID adjustment?

Uh... hmm... Well, none...
Mine is a non-Monsoon, Premium VI, and yes, the MID adjustment works.

Non-monsoon HU into a Monsoon system

OK, thought I'd revive this thread instead of starting a new one.

My Monsoon single din head unit died. We are going on a long road trip and I need to fix this in 2 days.

I swapped my girlfirends non-monsoon/single din, HU from her 00' Jetta, into my Golf and entered the security code. The radio works fine except no sound comes out, even at max volume.

Does anyone know how to make this work? Can it be reprogrammed with vag-com?

I dont think it will work because the Monsoon needs to be "turned on". This is accomplished via a DC signal sent down one of the speaker outputs. Both the DD Monsoon and the DD Preimum radios are one and the same but I believe the single dins are different. You can modify the amp to make it work but unless you are a electronics wiz it might not be possible in your time frame.

Now with all that said you can try to code it for DSP as the European DSP system functions the same as the Monsoon. Here is the coding---use the codes for "DSP".

STG56 (radio system) select STG coding - function 07

The coding of the first 4 places is intended only for the "gamma". With the "beta" the first 4 places are always occupied with "0".

??xxx: Sound tuning
00 - Basic curve
01 - Gulf (1J)
02 - Bora (1J)
03 - Golf/Bora Variant (1J)
04 - trade wind sedan (3B/3BG)
05 - trade wind Variant (3B/3BG)
06 - Lupo/Polo
07 - gulf Cabriolet (1E)
08 - Sharan (7M)/new Beetle (1C)
09 - Transporter/Caravelle

xx?xx: Number of loudspeakers
0 - no passive loudspeakers (DSP)
2 - 2 passive loudspeakers (in front) of
3 - 2 passive loudspeakers (in the back)
4 - 4 passive loudspeakers (in front and in the back)

xxx?x: Sound system correction
0 - No correction (without DSP)
1 - with system of sound of Bose
2 - sound system (DSP)

xxxx?: Radio configuration
+0 - Radio with passive antenna (blade antenna)
+1 - active antenna
+2 - CD Player/Wechsler
+4 - Secondary display in the instrument panel employment

Let us know how it turns out!

Ian,

So you are suggesting "enabling" the non-monsoon HU via coding at the unit itself? I'd hate to goof up and trash my GF's head unit and have it not work when I put it back in her car.

Is there anyway I can do this in vag-com?

That's the info he posted... In VAG-COM, access Control Module 56 (Radio), and edit values as per his instructions.

Ross-Tech may have more info on their site, re: radio coding.

* MAKE SURE YOU LOG THE OE (DEFAULT) VALUES *

Doh! I'm a boob. I did not know that, I don't have a vag-com but someone from the list helped my with theirs last time. That may help explain my stupidity.

Sorry.

But this is all good news! I can make her non-monsoon into a monsoon! hooray!

Thanks Everyone! I sent an e-mail to the club member that helped me last time, to see if I can borrow his vag-com again.

Keep us posted as to whether it works out.

What makes you think your HU "died"? Do you get any kind of activity on the radio (lights, sounds, singing, dancing...)? If your GF's radio doesn't appear to work, perhaps there is a wiring problem.

Maybe what you could try first is your radio in your GF's car, to see if your HU actually is dead.

It blinks the blue backlight and will not turn on or ask for a security code.
It happened after the battery was disconnected to replace the clutch.

I swapped radios last night and mine does not work in her car at all. Same blinking backlight.

I don't know about the Single Dins but the DD's do have onboard diagonostics (sp) you can access through the Vag-Com. Might bring the old radio along with you and check it with Vag. Good luck.
