Is it possible to find a golf alh 2002 in europe that won’t need repairs for at least 2 years of frequent driving, under $3000 CAD? I found a few on AutoScout24 that look to be in good condition

Honestly, you should try and find a Toyota Corolla or Camry or Honda Civic. Much cheaper to fix when there is a problem and pretty reliable to boot. The Golf is a great car, but a 2002 will most likely need a fair amount of upkeep to be reliable unless you find a Unicorn that has been well maintained and has low miles, don't just buy on outward appearance.

Really? There's certainly a lot of suppositions in those statements.

I cannot imagine what a $3,000 Corolla, Camry or Civic would need in the arena of maintenance. Where would you take? Dealer?

OP, yes it is possible............ but, can you really depend on the reliability of someone's evaluation in Europe? As practically everyone in this form suggests, if you're looking to buy a used TDI (this is the TDI Club), expect to do all the regular maintenance even if you get documentation of recent work. The Timing Belt and related components are the things that you will need to know when the last time they were replaced (miles/kilometres and age) with solid documentation. Change all the fluids. Inspect the brakes, lights, signals, condition of the tires (looking for wear patterns), exhaust system, bells & whistles inside (is the instrument panel lit up, especially the CEL light), etc. ..................... rust?

ewithk,

Not sure about your question? You're asking about a 2002 ALH Golf in Europe, but your signature says Canada? Regardless, your asking about a car that is almost 20 years old. Yes, it will need repairs. Your mechanical abilities factor in to maintenance.

why so set on 02?
I remember hearing that they had lifter/camshaft troubles that specific year
just had one a few days ago that had a lifter let go, hung the valve open and stuffed the valve into the injector
