Well, this one happened. Driving the car one day (2005 TDI Passat with Tipper). I noticed that it was hard shifting and then noticed that on the gauge cluster, all the gear selection lights would go on after about 3 minutes of driving. Coming to a stop, the car would be stuck in 3rd I believe until I stopped fully (the engine would bog considerably until I'm assuming the torque convertor let off). Starts were in 3rd gear and I was getting MIL/CEL on the console. I noticed that if I turned off the car, I could get back to using 1st gear on starts, but only for about 1 minute. Then the behaviour would repeat itself. So, I nursed it into the dealership and got a call back the next day about having 3 codes on the trans and needing to replace the transmission. They were going to do me a favor and let me have one installed for a reasonable $6800. So, I drove it home because it sounded a lot like the issues I had with my 01M, which ended up being a combination of the valve body, and the internal trans harness being cracked.
So, I'm sitting in the front seat typing this, after having read a few horror stories. I ran the codes and got this one from my VAG-Com:
17116 - Gear 2
P0732 - 003 - Incorrect Ratio - MIL ON
Now, I have a diagnostic from the dealer indicating that there were 3 of these. That's why I'm somewhat suspicious. It seems off to me that "suddenly" 3 gear decide to puke at once. This is even more fishy considering I can only pull one code.
I noticed there are some checks to be done before continuing on. I'll be performing those. I read that it seems that these transmissions can't be opened up. Is that the case or a wive's tale?
I've got another couple cars I can drive for the time being, but figured I'd ask the gurus for some help. If needed, I'd probably invest in another trans, but I'd like to make sure it's actually a requirement.
I'll update everyone on the status. I don't know why, but my gut tells me that this one isn't a slam dunk, so I'm going to find out for sure.
