I am a recent victim of the CR TDI diesel fuel problem. I have 2010 6spd. This is (was) the best car I've ever owned...by far. I planned to keep it for 500,000 miles. Then at 66,000 miles, it stalled and wouldn't start. I had it towed to the VW dealer where I purchased it. They had it for a full month. They said they couldn't figure it out. Then my service advisor was off sick for 10 days (no one at the dealership filled in for him...so my TDI just sat there). Finally they said they found the problem...contaminated fuel. They determined this because the fuel they drained from the tank "didn't smell right". But there was no fuel analysis done. They fixed the car for free (thank you Jesus!). It would have cost me about $9,500 they said. This "fuel contamination" could happen again at anytime. Next time it will be my nickel. So, regretfully, I'm selling my TDI. I can't believe this car is that susceptible to fuel contamination. There was no warning. It was running like a top, then it stalled. Maybe I'll look for a 2007 or 2008 TDI (pre-CR)

Without any description beyond "contaminated fuel" or knowing what failed and why, it seems like an extreme step to sell the car. Was it gasoline in the tank? Bad diesel? Did the HPFP fail, or did they replace it as a preventive repair?

I would be hard-pressed to make any decisions based on what you report the dealer has told you. It's entirely possible that they replaced the HPFP because it's dealers' habit to throw parts at a problem. And fuel that "doesn't smell right" isn't very descriptive.

You might want to dig a little more before deciding to sell the car, although given how casual it sounds like this dealer is you may not learn much. BTW, there weren't any TDIs sold in North America between 2006 and 2009.

In fact, the 2006 model year TDI was sold during that period. VW continued to sell the 2006 TDI as "leftovers" during those years since, beginning in model year 2007, all diesels sold in the USA must be clean burning.

Sure, there were leftovers sold as '06s. And my '06's VIN indicated it was an '07. But by law it was sold as an '06. So no TDIs sold between Model Years '06 and '09, if you want to put a finer point on it.
