I started down the path of discussions with a "seller" today. I posted a WTB ad yesterday, and I got a message from a new user (less than a month, no postings) that a different user (someone who hasn't posted in six months) had the part I wanted. They were even kind enough to send me the direct email address of that seller.

I know this type of scam has been reported already a few times on this thread but I want this to bump up so someone else will see it's still prevalent here since the last report of this type of scam on this thread was nearly 2 months ago. Be aware.

Here's the email chain, and honestly even after the first email back from the "seller" I was suspect.

Comments: I bought an as-advertised, plug and play Stage 2 kit for an Mk4. Kit came with injectors, ECU, cluster and Flashzilla with tune.
Flashzilla and tune did not work. Spent more money to get it to work to no avail. Contacted Celco (John) for help and possible support but did not receive an answer. Items sold were indeed not plug and play but sold as such.

Seller got back to me two weeks after writing this. Tried to do some helping but mostly was conflictive and not that helpful. I can't recommend this seller.

You purchased this lot of parts from me February 6th, 2023. I have not heard anything being a issue about the parts you received for over 4 months.... 134 days. While I was on vacation on June 20th you sent a PM stating that you had issues with the parts. 21 hours later you posted this feedback. I was notified by a IRL clubber friend, on text, while on vacation, that I had received this neutral feedback. Now that its my first business day back after vacation im happy to look into it.

I did noticed that you listed the flashzilla and the cluster for sale back in May, well before you asked for any kind of help or support from me last week.

got a mk3 cluster and cjaa ecu from @pkhoury- excellent shipper and packer :) very pleased :) having known him for a while now, one can be assured he's top-notch to deal with when getting any parts or other odds-n-ends from. friendly, honest, communicative :)

Yeah....feels like there are a fair number of 🧐 in that tale of woe, most prominently to me: can you just walk into any bank and withdraw $50K in cash? My parents tried to take out less than $10K to buy a used car and were told that the bank didn't have it on hand - had to get a bank draft.

But the point remains, the "good" (as in, "most effective") scammers are really good, and have obviously done a LOT of trial-and-erroring to figure out what tactics are most likely to succeed.
Here's another account from Cory Doctorow; not nearly as severe, but given that he's a highly regarded tech developer and commenter (he coined the apt term "enshittification" to describe the trajectory of online platforms), it's still surprising...and worrying! If this guy can get yanked, what chance do my parents in their 80s have?

I bought VCDS stuff from @Nuje back in the spring of 2023 (i think).
I don't think he is necessarily a vendor, but if he was, he would be the guy to buy from.

In case anyone can't tell by his helpful and friendly posts, he gave me a great deal on exactly what I needed to get started on my journey to fix my mk4 wagon.
He sold me a VCDS controller and a mac computer with a partitioned hard drive to run diagnostics on.
I didn't know about the seller feedback thread back then, and was brand new to the forum... but I got emails and texts aside from receiving the product quickly and exactly as advertised.
Just an all round great dude!

BUYER BEWARE:

I got scammed, user @ironsideTDI is a scammer. posted a WTB ad for a transmission and PM'd me with email normanamazing1966@gmail.com
had pictures of the transmission, with the gearbox codes and everything, I did a reverse image search, and they were originals. Seemed legit, but I told him I'd pay half up front and the other half after I received a tracking number.

I cashApped him $150, and then he sent me a fake shipping website: https://storagedeliveryco.com with a bogus tracking ID. Will not be sending the other $150. Talking to cashApp to see if I can get some of that money back.

Learn from my mistake:
Check user account created date, post history, and if they are active
Check the age of the CashApp accounts, if the account was made yesterday, run away

yeah, unfortunate, I'm pretty active on the VWVortex Forums with my 1.8t build, but I came here looking specifically for a 02j EGR transmission common in the TDIs. Figured if someone had one, this would be the place. Guess I'm still trying to find one! 😅

The last EGR Transmission so was on FB Market Place for $750 with no history. I kept in in Saved for months and months. Maybe it sold and maybe it didn't. I should have asked.
