The difference between my formal offer letter and the amount that I actually received was $450
When are you going to answer this question: How does the amount you actually got compare to what the calculators say you should have gotten? Is it because you already know that you got what you should have gotten?

From the calculator back in July, to the cash in my account, I received $186 more than estimated.

2010 Jetta TDI BOUGHT BACK 23 NOV 16. Now owner of 2016 Jeep Cherokee
Yes, Stohlman. I wasn't looking at other cars, but their lot isn't huge. If they still had your car, they would have moved it in back or to some side lot of some sort.

I overheard some salespeople talking about other customers who wanted to buy a new VW, and were just waiting for the buyback. Stohlman is our normal dealer for service, so I was yakking with the service guy we normally use. He had seen the Jalopnik report about stripped cars being turned in, so we talked about that a bit. Neither one of us thought there would be all that many stripped cars turned in.

Carlos was in fact my buyback person. There was someone else with him that he was training. They did ask if I needed another car, but when I told them I already had one, they didn't push it.
Sounds like it went well! I always liked them... They seem to know their stuff.. When I took it in for the 2308 recall he joked that "I was actually getting a free Malone tune" so he knew VWs and TDIs for sure

Don't hold your breath while waiting for the difference between your offer letter and the amount you received on buyback to reach your account. You won't make it. Chances are that you'll never see that money.

The difference between my formal offer letter and the amount that I actually received was $450 and as far as I can tell, I'll never see that money. I've called the hotline several times about this and e-mailed the class attorney. No joy.

Well it's a paid overage and by law I am owed that money. If they don't deliver, which I believe that they will, I will contact the attorneys. This isn't a discrepancy in mileage, or any other things, this is an actual overpaid amount that I am legally entitled to receive back.

In your case, I believe that the lender was overpaid, and that they would be the one that would be giving you a refund for the excess.

Just dropped the Sportwagen off at VW of Union in NJ. Transaction was fast and easy, received my email receipt while sitting with the rep. Now begins the wait for the email from Chase.

Dropped 2013 Passat SE off at Lafontaine VW on Friday afternoon (4:30 apt). Had a paper check in hand about 30 minutes later.

Completely painless process. Offer letter was $23,500. Check was $24,006.

Had garaged the car for the past 8 weeks with storage insurance and hoped to find myself in the next tier of payment Was happily surprised by the larger sum and deposited the check Saturday morning.

Off to the credit union on Tuesday to pay off the note on the 2015 Hybrid Accord I purchased to replace the Passat.

Nice to have the whole process completed. Came out ahead I think.

Just got back from my settlement closing this morning in Maryland. Quick breakdown:

Arrived at 10:00am, appointment was for 10:30am. I apparently was the first appointment.

Settlement specialist did not arrive until 10:20am. It took her 10 minutes to set up her laptop and printer. She was very nice, chatty. Told me she was an independent contractor.

So at 10:30 we started the appointment by taking photos of car, checked odometer, etc., then I signed the documents (which she had prepared before coming to the dealership -- I also brought my own documents printed from the portal, but she came ready with the same documents pre-filled; we used hers).

I was the first person she had dealt with who had an outstanding loan on the car, so she had to pause to make sure she was doing it right. Everything looked good to her, then she closed the case. I checked my email and I immediately received an email from VW with the receipt. She also showed me the receipt on her computer screen, and was worried that her printer wouldn't work to print it out. However, her printer did work, so I also had a printed receipt in hand.

The amount on the receipt was exactly the same amount as the settlement offer/letter.

For curiosity, I then took a moment to log onto the VW claims website via my smartphone just to see if the website showed my case as closed, and sure enough, it did.

She then escorted me to the "ambassador" and I told him I already bought a Toyota. :) The folks at the dealership didn't seem too interested in me and generally left me alone, although they did offer coffee.

We then walked outside and took off the license plates, chatted for a few minutes, and then I called an Uber. No one at the dealership offered me a ride. :-(

Anyway, over and done. Now I will wait for the EFT payment notification. Based on this forum, I should likely get that by tomorrow.

All in all I have to say it was a smooth process, in and out in about 20 minutes (not counting the 30 minutes I waited for her to arrive, since I got there 30 minutes early).

Thanks for the help on this forum, appreciate all the info, made the process much more smooth! Take care and good luck with your own buybacks!

This is only the "quick breakdown"...we're going to need the regular breakdown.
lol -- I was very detailed in documenting my experience just in case something went wrong. :) However, the extra detail wasn't necessary -- so yeah, my breakdown above is the "quick" version!

Correct and the lender is VW.

I doubt it.

The lender is most likely VW Credit, which is a separate entity. If VW Credit is overpaid you should get a check from them in a few weeks.

Seeing more than one post stating that the Settlement Specialist is directing owners to speak with someone from the dealership is troubling. No one should have to speak with anyone in sales as part of the process.

It was not "part of the process" from the description. The buyback was all settled before the rep escorted them to the "ambassador."

While maybe not part of the buyback itself, someone is directing the rep to put owners in front of sales. I just think it shouldn't happen.

Yes, with the exception of going outside and removing the license plates, we were technically done with the process before the buyback specialist escorted me to the ambassador. The ambassador asked me if I would like to look at cars. I thought that was a little annoying, but it was honestly kind of satisfying to tell him I already bought a Toyota.

I don't recall from what I've read of the court documents if they were allowed to do this... the ambassador wasn't pushy, so I didn't think much of it at the moment. However, it would have been a nice gesture if he had offered me a shuttle/ride back home. It's amazing how something small like that would have been a nice note to end this on -- gee, we're humans too -- but I was standing out in the freaking cold waiting for an Uber.

There was another guy on this thread moaning that the sales manager didn't come over and beg him for his business after he was done with his buyback...you just can't please everyone.

And here's an idea...when they offer to bring you over to the ambassador after the buyback is complete, you say 'No thanks'.

While maybe not part of the buyback itself, someone is directing the rep to put owners in front of sales. I just think it shouldn't happen.

Wow, they kicked you out of the dealership after the buyback and made you wait outside? That is cold. You'd figure they wouldn't mind you waiting in the service lounge or the showroom...that's weird.

Just to be clear, they didn't kick me out, apologies if it came across like that.

After we closed the buyback, and I was escorted to the ambassador, and I (respectfully) told the ambassador that I already bought a Toyota, he basically had literally no interest in me -- nothing.

While that was slightly awkward, I figured he had better things to do of course. BTW, it was generally not a welcome place in the dealership, with the exception of being offered coffee at the very beginning.

So after the ambassador moved on, the buyback specialist and I went outside to remove the license plates. It was freezing cold. When we were done, I felt a little strange going back in to the dealership, but I'm sure they wouldn't have kicked me out... they just didn't make me feel welcome at the end. It just felt awkward with the VW employees in general BTW, including the manager (I'll spare the details), and I felt a bit like an eyesore once the ambassador had basically lost a sales lead. Like they wanted me GONE from the dealership.

Anyway, it was my choice to stay outside and wait for the Uber... they didn't "throw" me out. Although I will say that dealership didn't earn any warm and fuzzy points by the end. I wasn't offended though. It just amazes me how many lost opportunities VW has had with this process, no one seems to go the "extra mile" anymore. And I'm not a jerk asking to be treated like royalty. Just a little more kindness would have left an entirely different impression.

BTW, the Uber guy was really nice. :)

Forgive my ignorance...our buyback is tomorrow. Based on the calculator, we should be receiving $500 more than the offer letter stated (based on mileage and the fact we haven't driven it since august, I assume). The buyback total should reflect what the calculator states once the rep enters our current mileage, right?? I want to make sure I understand everything completely so we don't get shorted. Thanks y'all.

Just posting "yes" was too short; the system required more text before it would accept the post.

ohhh! Well, thank you for the response! My sweet husband is clueless in this endeavor, so I want to make sure to tell him how much we should be getting.
