In the descriptions so far, the buyback ambassador has a tablet. Why would you not just enter the information right there? A secure browser to whatever chase was sending as a link, done before you walk out the door.

You don't want this run through one of those micropayment sites, that's just asking for trouble.
I think the ambassador company and VW wants to separate themselves 100% from cash handling. Even the paper checks are pre-printed by another company (they don't have a check printer/paper checkbook)

And the money is in my bank! Completed the EFT form with Chase last night (Thanksgiving night) and this morning .. its IN MY ACCOUNT!
Good to hear again! I'm taking my car in today at 1:30 PM. I realize the concerns with EFT but your experience builds confidence for me in it. I don't think Chase is using their Quickpay system for these payments but instead their typical wire funds transfer process which usually has a fee associated with it (probably paid for by VW).

Anyway, I'll post here how my process went, too.

Wish me well. I think I'm the first buyback to be processed at this dealership (Central Valley VW, Modesto, CA).

Whenever I've sent or received e-mail money transfers, the sender is required to set a password which is given to the recipient.

The password should be communicated to the recipient by some other method, preferably not using the same e-mail address that the EFT is sent to. This could be done over the telephone, by text message, in-person, etc...

With my bank they use the terms "E-mail money transfer question" and "E-mail money transfer answer." So theoretically you could ask the recipient a question that they will already know the answer to, but the average person wouldn't. You wouldn't even have to tell them the answer (password) in advance.

That way, if the e-mail is sent to the wrong person, or the e-mail account is hacked, they don't know the password and can't complete the transaction.

Is that not part of this process? No password needed to receive the money?

wilcharl...you rock!!! What an awesome in depth thread posting! Your info definitely helps when I do decide on a date to pick for a buyback appointment. Unfortunately, I'm just waiting on my factory order Subaru to arrive, hopefully end December then lock in a date for the TDI buyback appointment. Thanks again wilcharl!

Probably the easiest thing they could have done is simply scanned one of your checks, and that would have snagged the routing and account number. They could have then processed the payment directly. But they chose to not do this for some reason.

My problem is that I choose long random passwords for all financial accounts, and these passwords are all stored in a password vault. I really don't want to be trying to enter a 20 character random password into their tablet.
What I was implying was enter your account info, routing and account numbers, same as grabbing it from the check. Was not implying that you would log in, I wouldn't do that either, but if they are looking for you to enter the bank routing and account info, having the tablet connected to chase for the entry, the ambassador has the link or paper check, you want the EFT, they click the link, the browser goes to the link, you enter the same thing as the email is asking for, without the need for insecure emails. Since few have pgp or gpg enabled email, having this part completed during the turn in seems far lower risk.

Thanks for the post with the pictures Wil, by the time I get my offer and appointment I assume it'll be even smoother.

Amazing how a thread about an actual buyback gets 20+ posts of just drivel. I guess I shouldn't expect anything less given the state of the forum the past year and a half. You just can't make some people happy.

Regarding the EFT, I wonder what would happen if I walked into a car dealership and said to them "Ok, I want to drive this car home today. I will set up an EFT after I leave and you will be contacted within 24hrs through email for payment." I wonder how that would go over....

So here is a concern with the EFT process that TDIClub member ERICY figured out (I didn't realize it when I did the EFT)

The Chase Portal does nothing to validate you are who you say you are (doesn't ask for your VIN or anything)

IF someone has your email password and intercepts the email before you or gets ahold of the Chase URL in the email, Chase/VW have no safeguards to prevent someone from typing their account routing/acct # in the link and sucking the money into their account before you even get it.

Sending a hot link with the money attached to it in an unsecure email puts the money at the mercy of your email accounts security.

In hindsight I think I would have done the paper check for instant gratification , but the EFT process was quick and seamless

get the check
get the check
get the check

Just did mine today at Dick Ide VW in Rochester - allegedly the first one in town! It was their first time too, so they didn't really know what to expect either. There was an "ambassador" (dude with the tablet who did all the talking), and a "local representative" who I guess would be handling the back end such as storing and shipping out the cars. They didn't know how the EFT worked, and asked if I had already entered a bank account # on the site (TBH, I couldn't remember since it was over 2 months ago), but luckily I was able to get on here via my 'phone and read this thread, which put my mind at ease (just waiting for the EFT email now).

Whole thing took about 15 minutes, and the email receipt following closure was instantaneous. I didn't get a paper receipt, and they kept my registration document (I'd already made a copy at home). The only delay was in removing my plates, because the screws were rusted and stripped, so had to be drilled.

PRO-TIP: put some WD40 on your license plate screws the night before your turn-in, to loosen them up a bit!

Have you never purchased a car by writing a personal check? It's commonly done. A personal check is far less secure than an EFT.
Have bought new cars with checks

1966 Chevy Super Sport
1973 Ford 150
1978 Chevy 3/4 ton van
1980 Honda Civic
1981 Honda Accord
1982 Honda Accord

I'm starting to sound like an echo here, but my money arrived overnight, too. Cha-ching!
Love it man!

Now I'd love to hear about someone who has returned a wrecked car that still runs and drives with a clear title.........

Road kill

Missing spare tire?

One keyfob?

No mats?
I'm just curious if they will honor the buyback with the only mandate that it run on it's "Own 2.0-liter TDI engine" if it has a clear title.

To the OP or anyone who has completed the process, Did they start the car and drive it around?

Did they take it out on the road?

All they did was start it and took a picture of the tach showing the engine was running. They did ask me to move it to get better side/front photos (they take exterior photos)

If I was worried that my engine was going to fail, I would park it where they can walk around it without a problem to take their pix..

Considering how fast the $$$ are showing up in accounts I am thinking this money is a "wire" and not an EFT

It certainly is NOT the micropayment site similar to PayPal that Chase has to send small amounts for the "eligible seller restitution"

In that case, I guess it's more important to make sure the gauge cluster is working, and not so important if the tranny isn't too great.

Thanks again for the great thread!

I'm turning this in...

All I'm waiting for is my offer papers to be reviewed and to schedule my appointment. I have since the pictures posted... replaced the radiators(with my dealership card money), bent the hood a bit flatter, cut the airbags out(from them deploying), and removed any loose broken parts up front. The engine starts without hesitation and I've driven it down my road about 3/4 of a mile and back. Been holding on to the car since August, lol.
I'm gonna tow it with my truck to the dealership and then drive it into the lot. So, it should be pretty interesting.

I was the very first buyback in the state of Wisconsin. Glad I printed the pdfs from the website because the tablet wasn't working ?. The whole process took 23 minutes and seemed pretty smooth. But I knew more about everything (including the EFT process thanks to OP) than the guy did. Thanks TDI Club members.

That's exactly why we are all here! Shows a good sense of community when someone reads what you wrote for advice on a $20k deal!

Just curious if anyone turning in yet has a dual signer on the car. My TDI has both myself and the wife's names. Just curious if we both have to go for the turn in or if can just go.
