I bought a 2011 VW Golf TDI six years ago. It was a fun car to drive with great MPG. After the scandal broke and I did the calculations, I couldn't pass up the money VW was offering. Furthermore a major service was due.
Initially I registered my vehicle, but didn't realize you had to upload all the required documents (I learned that from reading the forums here). After I got my settlement offer which had to be notarized, it kept getting rejected with no explanation.
It was very frustrating getting no answer from the national number or TDI representative at my local dealer. After another call to the national number, she said I needed another page because I was in CA.
After the documents were accepted, I was just waiting (it was really helpful reading the forums here to see I wasn't the only one).
In the meantime, I was shopping for a new car. I looked at and test drove several cars before deciding to buy another VW Golf. Some dealers were less responsive than others when I requested a quote.
A few hours after I applied for pre-approval from VW Finance, I got an email to make an appointment. I returned my car on Friday morning.
I told the TDI representative I really liked the car, but couldn't pass up the offer. I said I wasn't too concerned about the emission scandal. The TDI representative said other TDI owners told him the same thing.
The final step was talking to a representative of the dealer confirming they were now in possession of the TDI. When she asked if I needed a new car, I told her I already bought one. I said I requested a quote from her dealership but no one ever responded.
I got an email from Chase Bank regarding payment arrangements in the afternoon and another email regarding actual payment Friday night (still waiting until Monday, the next business day).
For all intents and purposes, VW gave me a replacement car. I took the floor mats and spare tire. I also swapped out the 17" wheels on the TDI with the 15" wheels on the new Golf (it drives much better).
Once again, thank you for everyone who posted to this forum. It was really helpful.
