In CA, keep the plates if they're custom or if you want 'em. VW's treating this like they would a trade, in other words when you walk away from the buyback appointment, you're done!

What have people been doing with their license plates and registration?

Does the dealer keep the plates?
Do we need to contact DMV to cancel the registration?

I'm in CA, not sure if it's different for various states.
I left the plates on the car and I filled out the "Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability" form online:

https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/detail/online/nrl/welcome

More info: https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/detail/pubs/brochures/reg/nrl

I put "VOLKSWAGEN" as the buyer and got their address from the Odometer Disclosure Statement which I've had photocopied at the dealer whilst signing papers.

In Vermont, I kept my plates and registration, which does not expire until next summer.

To make sure the plates would come off the car at the dealer, I loosened the screws in my driveway a turn each, so I knew the plates would be easy to remove at the dealer.

If they're custom but not simply "if you want 'em." In CA, plates go with the car.

Notify the DMV ASAP to cancel any liability after transfer.

The plates are attached to the VIN. An ambassador will probably not care if you yank them off the car (if that's what you meant by the rules being a "little lax") and hang them on your wall, but there isn't any legal authority for you "owning" them.

You can't use them for any other vehicle, not even the same vehicle, ever so it would be pointless (unless to hang on your wall). You (or any current owner) are required to request and place new plates on a vehicle when it's plates have become lost, mutilated, or otherwise unreadable. The DMV will require the current owner to produce a police report to request the new plates (so you can see how that might complicate things if anyone is directed by VW to contact the police and initiate a report of you "stealing" them off the car) and a bunch of other documentation.

But, like I said, they probably won't stop you and we don't know if these are ever going back on the road. The point is, though, if someone *does* try and stop you they're in the legal right so just back off instead of causing the person doing their job grief.

This isn't true, particularly if you have a vanity plate (or amateur radio plates, veteran plates, etc). Depending on which state you live in, you can fill out a form to transfer the plates and registration.

Both he and I made it clear we were talking about CA and non-custom plates (and both of us were responding to a third person who clearly stated he was asking about CA specifically).

Just a follow-up for anyone interested. I received the EFT sign-up from CHASE on Friday after 8pm (my turn-in appointment was the day before-Thursday) and the money showed up in my bank account this morning shortly before 8am. Fairly quick turnaround I'd say.

Good deal. Yup...that's pretty quick. That's how it should work.

Similar experience here:

12/8 - Turned car in last Thursday around Noon.

12/9 - Received email from Chase and entered EFT data Friday night close to 11PM EST.

12/12 - Money was transferred this AM.

So that's about 50 hours turnaround even on a weekend for the EFT, and less than four days after turn-in to have money in our checking account.

Now I am paying off our 2015 Golf and keeping the GTI loan (better interest rate).

Did anyone that's completed a buyback have their buyback appointment scheduled on or around (within a week) of the "Total Outstanding Loan Amount on xx/xx/xxxx" date that was given in your offer letter?

I'm assuming the answer to that question is "no," but I thought I'd ask. When I chatted with someone on the claims line this morning...the date they threw out as likely for my buyback (my offer is sent in and I'm waiting on the response to make an appointment) is that date.

I'm assuming that date was only given as a projection for payoff purposes and has nothing to do with the possible payoff and buyback date. Thank you.

In Arizona, it's a "Plate to owner" state so you keep your plates OR turn in for credit of unused paid registered time. In our case, we've already purchased the replacement but waiting until this BB is done before transferring the personal plate from #DasPoluter to our Subaru to prevent any issues and then we will "kill" the Subaru plates and get credit/balance of used time.

Just cleaned out my car, vacuumed her, cleaned the Labrador nose prints off the back windows and wiped down the inside, too cold for a wash. She's been a great little car, turning her in tomorrow and feeling a bit sad.

LOL I just told my son and husband, I am feeling the same way! I really had no problems with this car, but the buyback is just too good to pass up!

The VW journey ends..... $$$ hit the bank account today. EFT took 2 business days. The CHASE website must be over -loaded because it was a real pain trying to log into the site and create the account, fund transfer, etc..

So for those of you who get the email from CHASE, be patient and keep trying to log in. It will work eventually.

Best of luck to everyone...

If you still have original stereo, might want to remove upgrade and sell it separately, and just give them back OEM unit. Wouldn't bother re-installing it, they will probably part the car out anyway.
I have the stock RCD510, so I'll be putting it back in and taking the RNS510 out, I just hope I can sell it lol

1 down, 1 to go. Completed the buy back on my car late this afternoon. Ambassador was very nice, because of the forum I knew exactly what to expect, received a paper receipt, took about 15/20 minutes. I bought the car on a rainy day and she went back on a rainy day.

Turned in Passat yesterday at 4pm. Took less than 10 minutes. Swapped wheels and Nav. Only one key.......and fuel light on. All went fine. Got check and deposited on the way home at ATM. Funds are cleared and in my account this morning at 8 am. Hopefully the new Audi will arrive this week.

I turned in my 2010 JSW Friday 12/9 at 1030 a.m., got a receipt while I was sitting with rep. Did not get anything from JPMorgan until Monday 12/12 around 8 p.m.. I immediately entered by non-chase bank info in and got the eft Tuesday around 8 a.m. There was a little anxiety waiting for the eft since I bought my new car Friday afternoon, but would have had to wait for the check to clear too.

Turned in my Sportwagon 1 hour ago. Took about 10 minutes. Buy back amount agreed perfectly with notarized offer ($31006.16). Received e-mail receipt and now waiting for Chase Bank e-mail. I am going to miss the car. Especially the engine. Too much money to pass up and I am concerned about long term maintenance costs with city driving. Driving pattern has changed.

Completed the transaction this morning, no ****s given about anything other than driving it forward 3 feet, back three feet, writing down the odometer, and taking 4 external photos. (expired registration on a trip permit and a dead battery, I left it running until he verified motion). I was given a transaction receipt as well as a real-time email of the same. The guy running the show said he didn't work for VWoA or the dealership but instead implied he was basically a title processor hired by the court. The business card he had says VWoA but has a blank line to write his name in over "settlement specialist". All the dollar figures matched the offer letter.

And mine is gone now as well. I got the receipt email while I was still there - they happened to have a printer, and they printed out a receipt for me as well.

Now waiting for the Chase email.

They did say that they are ramping up a bit and taking appointments on two different days starting next week.

Everyone was very nice. The I got a ride in the courtesy shuttle back home again (about 2 miles).

Turned in my 2011 A3 yesterday and said goodbye to my little red wagon. I will miss her.

The appointment was very smooth and now just waiting for the email from Chase. Thank you to everyone here for sharing info on the process along the way - it was so helpful to me.

Happy trails. . .

2011 Golf - Returned to VW
My 2011 Golf TDI was turned in as well yesterday. The reps working at the dealership were great and I was in and out within 20 minutes.

I dropped my car off and parked it in the service area the evening before my appointment so when I drove in my other car the following day I had no transportation issues. I waited inside as the rep went outside, did his pictures, started, and I suppose moved it. When he came back he showed the odometer picture and asked if this was right...it was.

I am still waiting on my Chase email as well but look forward to this being done. My Golf just had a check engine light trip a couple months ago and when I brought it in to the dealership it requires a new intake manifold at about $1200. I parked it until drop off and if and when VW applies a fix they can replace it themselves.
