<snip> The amazing thing to me, two people (minimum) risked their lives for parts that are less than $1,000. I am a gun owner, and a very good shot. And yes, I would have shot them dead on the spot. And they risked their lives for less than $1,000 ????
People get killed for a lot less than that every day. I guess shooting someone for boosting parts off your car is still grounds for justifiable homicide in the Wild West. Don't try that here in IL, because if you do, you're going inside for quite a while. When you say in court "I feared for my life," (which is what you say), it has to be reasonable. The connection between that statement and the hood being stolen off your truck is going to be a hard one to make.....

I got a reminder email today for an appointment that is still 12 days out. Well, that's weird. Maybe they are having trouble with noshows for some reason? Perhaps the screwups because of the timezone issues that they have hopefully corrected by now? Who knows.

The date/time in the email was what I expected it to be..
It's not a screw-up on VW or the settlement peoples end. There are people in this forum talking about sending in the notarized offer letter, locking in a buyback appointment, and just not showing up.

I asked just this question in another thread..."how many buyback appointments are going to go wasted/unused by people that scheduled an appointment...knowing full and well that they had no intention of turning their car in for the next two years.

My appointment was today, Dec 3 @ 2pm at Langway Volkswagen - Chevrolet in Manchester Center Vermont. I got there early, made sure at home that my license plate screws were not frozen in place. They took me in at 1:10 and it was all over by 1;25 PM. I was the second of three appointments for the day. They looked at my drivers license, looked at, but did not keep, my registration, and, of course, kept the title. I got a paper receipt there, and the e-mail receipt almost immediately. Signed the mileage statement and the power of attorney so they could complete the title transfer to themselves.

I did not remember if I had signed up for check vs EFT. Turns out it was EFT. So I am awaiting the e-mail from Chase. However, I gave the representative (there were three) a voided check for the account I intend the deposit to go into, in case everything goes haywire with Chase. They went out to verify mileage, assume they started the car, but did not drive it around. Removed my plates and gave them to me. (They got from me, as a "bonus", a used Continental tire that originally came with the car. But they never mentioned it).

The calculators all along have told me my total payment was to be $14875. For some reason, my offer letter said $15150, which I assumed was wrong. The buyback figure turned out to be $14875, which is fine with me, as that is what the settlement called for.

They were very appreciative of the fact that I had loosened the license plate screws by a turn each, so they were easy to remove. They told me I was super prepared. I told them that tdiclub.com let me know what to expect.

In addition to my TDI (daily driver), I also own a 2015 Ford F150, supercrew. The new style, aluminum. About 4 months ago, I walked out of the house one morning to discover that someone had stolen the hood and the left front quarterpanel (light assembly). They did this between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m., sitting in my driveway, with me at home.
The parts were less than $1,000, but labor (mostly paint matching) drove the total cost to $2,300 (insurance paid). The amazing thing to me, two people (minimum) risked their lives for parts that are less than $1,000. I am a gun owner, and a very good shot. And yes, I would have shot them dead on the spot. If someone breaks into your house...they're fair game. However, Castle Doctrine does not extend to the depreciating heaps of metal in your driveway.

Be prepared to spend a fortune on lawyers, spend time in hearings and trials, and then possibly lose.

Laws in all states are different.

I turned my 2011 TDI in today at 3:00 PM.
My offer letter was $18,706.73 (car had 77480 miles) and the receipt letter was $18,256.73 which is $450.00 less. The dealer said just call the !800 number and they will likely give you a top check to cover the difference.

I called the 1-844-982-5246 number and the lady had no idea, and had to ask for a supervisor. The response was that I did not read the fine print that stated again in very fine print "If you turn your car in before December 15th, there is a 450 - 500 less payout. I never seen this so called fine print. I guess that is why the previous 3 earlier appoints gaveled their return appointment.

Had I known this, i would have stripped the car.

Very frustrating.

What is the process for when your offer is approved and you select a buyback date? Can you search multiple dealers and compare dates?
You will be asked for your current mileage followed by asking you if you will be returning the car to the dealer you selected when you first registered. If you answer YES, you will see that dealers open appointments. If you answer NO, you will be asked for your zip code & the radius to search for other dealers. You can then view the other dealers open appointments for comparison prior to selection.

HaHa! You gave them some extra goodies. I wonder if some people will show up with a trunk full of crap that normal waste management companies won't take.

Yes. Some people want to strip their cars. But I am generous, and gave them a tire with some useful tread remaining. As they recondition cars for possible resale or donation, I figured they might find it useful. ;)

I wonder what they would do if someone showed up with the car packed full of old clothes, bags of leaves, etc.? :D

I'm not even taking out the mats, but damn it would be funny except for one small detail. The poor dealership guys had nothing to do with all of this. Otherwise, it would be funny.

Other than driving the car to a storage spot, and then maybe helping get them on the transporter trucks, I don't think the dealership guys have any role in going through the contents of cars turned in.

Oh, I was also generous, and left them about 2.5 gallons of fuel in the fuel tank. It was not bone dry, so they won't run out moving the car around.

My appointment to turn in my Beetle TDi was at 3:30 today, we got there early and the whole thing took about 15 minutes and we walked out at 3:25 with a check for $28,156.73 which was exactly what the settlement letter stated.

Turned in my 14' TDI Jetta (18107 mi on odo) at Bommarito VW in Hazlewood, MO.
Although 1st buyout case at dealer and with 1st time inspector, a 2nd seasoned inspector was present and guided the whole process in 15 min. Rather pleasant exchange.
Process executed as described by other posters. Relieved when transaction receipt from VW agreed on mileage and previously offered price.
Just waiting for Chase e-mail to set up EFT info and on to final fund transfer sometime next week.

And criminal charges may not be the greatest challenge in the aftermath of such an event. If the person killed has any family at all, a civil suit is very likely, and the standards for conviction are much lower- only a preponderance of the evidence, rather than reasonable doubt. Then there's a very real risk of being stripped of every asset not protected by law.

I am guessing the crime rates are much lower in Texas than Illinois.

Zimmerman's case had nothing to do with "stand your ground" laws. Neither does shooting someone who's stealing your property.
This might clear things up for you: nation.time.com/2013/06/13/when-you-can-kill-in-texas/

...and what's the connection to "stand your ground" laws? That's right, there isn't one.

These events, among others, came to my attention after googling 'stand your ground'.
BTW, smartypants, there isn't a law using the words 'stand your ground'.
Another thing I found out by googling 'stand your ground'.:p

I hope, when the car was turned in, you remembered to remove the Glock from the glove box!!

I turned my car in at 1030am Friday. Still have not gotten anything asking where to deposit the money. I'm a bit annoyed that I have to spend the weekend checking my spam folder and wondering what's going to happen on Monday. But that's OK because according to VW their job is done. Really? You'd think they would at least wait until the money is transferred before slamming the door shut on my claim. What's the rush? They certainly aren't meeting the other deadlines! (That they agreed to BTW).

BTW, smartypants, there isn't a law using the words 'stand your ground'.
But there have been a number of laws passed using that phrase as a description, and none of them are relevant to either of the scenarios mentioned in this thread. A "stand your ground" law states that if you are attacked in a place where you have a legal right to be, you don't have to run away before using force against your attacker. Whether the media is deliberately trying to connect those sorts of common-sense laws with the outrage surrounding scenarios like those discussed here, or whether they're just irredeemably stupid, is hard to tell.

I wouldn't recommend to one of my clients that they shoot someone who's stealing property, even if it were legal, but I also am not likely to cry over the death of a couple of lowlifes.

This is a very real caveat. My brother works for the TSA at the SLC airport. Incidents several times a month where people have handguns in their carryons consistently demonstrate embarrassment, they simply forgot the guns were in there. So a good reminder might be to go through the car completely before turning it in, no matter what one thinks is in there......

These forgetful air travelers..................what sort of penalty assessment does your brother indicate in these instances?

Much of our population would seem paranoid about weapons..................

Seasons best,
