Buyback and getting a GTI, what are some of the deals you're getting?

be aware that you more than likely will not get the 0.9% apr with 7k off msrp. the dealer will offer you ~4% apr with the large discount on the car, or the .9% with a lesser discount. I got mid 6k off my gti and they told me 3.9%, I eventually negotiated them down to 2.9% and signed the deal. I may have been able to get them down to low or mid 2's but it was just enough back and forth already

use this calculator to weigh your options on whether to take the lower APR vs. the higher discount (https://www.edmunds.com/calculators/incentives-rebates.html). I called a few credit unions before I signed the deal and received a quote to refinance at 2.45%, however refinance incentives might change for the better after the end of the year. .45% isn't enough of a cut for me to think about refinancing, but mid 1's might sway me... we will see.
^^^ Thanks for posting this Edmunds link, I'm now more inclined to wait until my appointment of 1/23 since the end-of-year deals really aren't that good right now. I didn't realize that if you offered significant off MSRP they would counter with a higher APR. The "Dealer Cash option" only is if you pay cash (and not a briefcase of C-notes - that was a good comment!)

I'm hoping that something decent is offered in January, seeing that buybacks are underway. I'll take the chance of a better deal or miracle of a fix being announced (back to leaning on the fence again...)

The education gained from the link above does make it easier for me to handle the finance pressure they seem to be experts at. I couldn't understand why my 2015 Jetta TDI S at $20K out the door at 0% (in July of 2015) was a $288/month payment, but a 2017 TDI SEL at $22K was quoted at $373/month (lease was $311)...the interest rate wasn't disclosed initially and it makes more sense now. I want to be in the same general ballpark, not increase for a similar price range .

I had some time yesterday and was comparing the features of my '15 Jetta TDI S to what's current, heated cloth seats seem to be a novelty for the TDIs as they had their own trim additions :)

TDI to GTI 1st drive share

Completed buyback and new car acquisition yesterday, total time ~ 2 hours (20 minutes was the buy-back and 10 of that was simply yakking pleasantly), now driving a 2017 GTI Sport, bone stock (well, okay, got mudflaps because, well, NE PA - winter or not).

Naturally having a hatchback after me & the mrs were done with VW we rolled down to IKEA to get a few things before heading home. She's from Sweden so getting within range of the Mother Ship almost always necessitates a visit if for nothing else a few bars of Marabou. {chuckle}

We got about 1/2" of wet snow freshly on the roads as I came to work today (none there when I left home but total coverage by half-way to work), car handled it just fine; no surprises, no problem managing wheel force. No place I tried to PUSH it, obviously, but early indications are good.

Gotta say, Mk7 > Mk6 Golf in a big way; GTI > TDI huge in all but one way (duh). Fit and finish on the NA built GTI looks great so far, in pretty much every way tangible it's an upgrade in driving experience from my TDI - surprises me how much nicer impression the interior is over my old car, from seat structure to textiles to the improved dash and so forth.

Lighting is huge gain over previous, I'll never be happy with halogens again. "loss" of fog-lights may be an issue for a couple drives a year, depends when bad fog / snow hit, then I'll know for sure.

Console reported FE yesterday at overall average of 31 mpg for about 140 miles of use, mixed highway and byway, with two people and some stuff loaded; take that for what you want. Car has a total of 370 miles on it at this point so not exactly broken-in yet in any way.

Shout out to Ciocca VW in Allentown PA - both the dealership staff and the independent Buyback specialist. We live moderately far away so me and the mrs had paced our morning gently but we hate being late to appointments and we ended up getting to Ciocca about 90 minutes early, yet both the Buyback and Ciocca staff were very flexible and we had no issues no problems getting taken care of early. All were very pleasant and helpful without going overboard; no issues with my USAA based car purchase and financing. Crucial to me that they handled things well mostly remotely since they are ~90 miles away from home.

Car had 233 miles when we picked it up, dealership obviously drove it in from wherever they got it as it was not stock on their lot when I contacted them originally earlier this month. Would have liked less but considering they had to find the precise car I wanted, and in the scheme of things that's nothing for a 20k/year driver.

the only thing I'm missing is the TDI fuel range. accidentally ran the GTI to 0 miles to empty, pulled up to the gas station and barely squeezed 11.5 gallons into it.

Congrats. My experience is it only gets better every time you drive it and become more comfortable and familiar with it.

$6k off on a red GTI S manual near Kansas City, MO. Emailed 10 dealers asking for $6k discount. Could have had 5500 off several places and only one dealer replied right away with 6k.

I'm still hoping to add a TDI sportwagen or Passat later after the fix is available.

Nice job.

I had negotiated a Sport w/DSG down to just over $25K OTD (i.e. ~5K off).

I just couldn't justify the extra $3K over what I paid for a slightly used 2016 S w/LP.

Hello,

* Gotta say, Mk7 > Mk6 Golf in a big way;

I feel exactly the same way about all of your points when compared to my Mk6 Jetta. I loved my Mk6; it was light-years ahead of my Mk3. The Mk7 GTI almost raises the bar by "light-years" again. I drove my Mk6 two nights ago just to refresh my memory. Yup: 2014 Jetta TDI w/Premium is definitely better than the 2015 Jetta SE that I had as a loaner for a week. And my stock GTI is definitely better than my Stage 2 2014 Jetta TDI. My wife's 2014 has only 20,000 miles on it. Her back-to-back comparison between our two Jettas is that they feel the same. So it's not necessarily an "old car vs. new car" thing.

As stated above by someone else, the only thing I'm missing about my TDI at this point is the range. I'm refueling every 375 miles and averaging a solid 32 mpg. I think 36 is an easy achievement on a highway trip. We'll see someday.

The Mk7 GTI is wonderful! I'm looking forward to doing a few mods.

Great job! Congratulations!

I know I'd love a new GTI, but I'm hanging in there with my 2010 Golf TDI. It's such a wonderful car. I recently upgraded to the CP3 HPFP and my car already had everything I could want in a car, so I'm going forward just the way things are.

Good luck with your GTI!!!

I may eventually fall into some light mods, but I choose to keep my craziness on my mountain bikes and want the car as the reliable and fun and "reasonably" economic pace (fuel + maint cost).

That's not to say over time mods won't happen, but in the near term they're limited to condition-preservation things (weathertech mats and visors, seat covers, maybe window tint) and capability enhancement (torklift hitch for bike carrier, probably yakima roof rack).

Haven't had the GTI a week yet but there's no chance of exchange-remorse at this point.

Ask me again after my first speeding ticket though. It's only a matter of time. I "learned how to drive" in Germany and I live in NE PA ... argh.

I have been shopping for a used MKVI TDI. But I am seeing crazy good deals on Autotrader for new MKVII's from dealers in VA. Like $7,300 off MSRP. At $19,500 for a GTI S its pretty tempting.

I'm trying not to get sucked into the new car just because of the higher costs of registration, insurance etc. But the new one has some nice features over the 2012 that I'm looking at today. The apple car play, back-up camera, more powerful engine, better mileage, adaptive suspension, full warranty.

I'm looking at a 2012 Autobaun today with 60k. I greatly prefer the leather and like the better audio and headlights. But even if I talk it down to $12k or so which is bluebook its still pretty tempting to jump to a new car.

I had caught the new car itch a couple months ago. Fought through it, and now I plan to keep my golf for at least another 100k miles. At 200 hp/ 350 ft/lb it is a lot of fun for a car that can get 45+ mpg.

Got the 2017 Jetta 1.4TSI SE as replacement for our Jetta TDI. Paid 18.7k OTD. paid some more for extended maintenance and platinum warranty etc. VW doesn't cover the 30k free maintenance like they did before. Anyway, car drives well and is peppy (much better than the 2016 Camry 2.5 I rented for the week in between).

Is that the 2011 in your sig or another one?

My TDI is going to be hard to say goodbye too. But the GTI that I just drove checked a lot of boxes for me. It was a blast to drive and it fit like a glove. Those seats were amazing.

But the price point of the used ones pushes me towards new if they can really be had for sub-$20k. I didn't want to go there, but maybe its the best move. My next stop is to a dealer to try on a MK7.

All that said, if I could actually purchase a MKVI TDI Golf then I would. But I've realized that if/when they can actually be sold again or start showing up used, the pent up demand is going to keep prices way too high.

Yup, that's my '11 golf. I love the car and have done pretty extensive mods:

CP3 hpfp, cr 170 turbo and Malone stage 3.5 tune, buzzken exhaust, panzer plate, sigma six short shifter, Polar FIS, gtd grille, rims, pyrometer, new clutch , racepipe, lowering springs, and probably a bit more I'm forgetting. For me it's pretty much the ideal daily driver.

I don't know those GTI's are pretty nice. You should probably buy one and sell me your Golf. :p

I didn't make it out to drive the MK7 today. Inventory in base model manuals is pretty low. I think there is only 1 base model stick shift out of my three closest dealers. And its red. I'll go drive it, but red is out and its pretty tough to get dealers to bid for your business when they don't have any inventory. Meanwhile the VA dealer has about 8 of them in stock and 38 GTI's all together. It must be a huge dealership.

Yeah, when I was looking at mk7 gti's it was super hard to find a two door manual. Let alone one in my preferred color. They really are nice cars though- had a fun test drive. :D

The 2-doors are gone. Discontinued for 2017. I want a 4-door anyway so that doesn't bother me. One less thing to filter in my searches.

Bought a 2017 GTI S 6MT on 12/28/16. Was able to get $6k off MSRP plus there was a $179 admin fee.

MSRP 26735
Less 6000
Plus 179
Paid 20914 OTD

To get this price I emailed about 10 dealers within a couple hundred miles of Kansas City, MO and said I was targeting $6k off MSRP. One dealer about an hour away (Lawrence, KS) responded that he could do the deal. It was super easy, walked in, and did all the paperwork within an hour. I had researched some of the eastern dealers and the deals reported on forums and figured $6k off was doable. A couple other dealers offered 5500 off MSRP.

Within 500 miles I added the APR tune, and I love the car. Best car I've owned.

I had turned in 2 TDI Passats.

Holy ****, that's a good deal. I want a 17 GTI Sport because of the diff and the brakes, what are those going for?

The cheapest I saw a Sport going for online last night was about $22-23k I think. Since I'd prefer leather I'd probably go all the way for an SE if it got to that point. I saw those as low as $24k.

I don't know if those dealers advertising low on Autotrader are playing games and adding fees at the end. They aren't local and I haven't contacted them. I searched within 500 miles and the deals were all in MD and VA. I'm guessing just more competition down there and bigger dealers who are working on volume vs. margin.

I was just looking at a dealer that had SE's cheaper than the Sports. Way bigger discount on the SE than the Sport. I wonder if that indicates that there is high demand on the Sport models. My local dealers don't have any sports at all. Lots of people must want the performance upgrades and the cloth seats/no sunroof I guess.

Ya, I just want the brakes and the trick diff. Then I will have change left over for an APR tune and a stack of tires ?

The price drop a few weeks ago seems to have worked. I can't drive 10 miles without seeing a MK7 GTI and the number left on the lots is getting thin.

I'm going to pull the trigger on a 2012 Autobahn 4 door with 60k on it today. It appears to be in excellent condition. I almost went brand new, but I was having trouble with getting an S vs. SE. So pretty soon I was going to be looking at $25-26k on an SE, even if I got a great deal. Or I was going to get an S for 21K or so and then risk having buyers remorse. So now it will just come down to reliability of my new 2012 since I've got an expensive car with no warranty. Either way going from a 2003 MKIV to a fully 2012 is a big upgrade to me. I'm going to miss the diesel but thankfully not missing too much else since the GTI has a lot going for it including low end torque with a nice flat band.

And to get a deal means dealing with car dealers. One visit to my local dealer reminded how incredibly painful it was. I had to pretend that the BS MSRP prices he was quoting me were grounded in reality. Then I had to listen to his misinformation (S series doesn't have heated seats he says). Then I had to have him lead me around looking for a car that turned out not to be prepped. Eventually I at least got to sit in an S with an automatic so I could at least see the interior. The plaid wasn't as bad in person, but I still didn't care for it. The leather just transforms that car into near luxury for me.
