Burning smell

The car has done this off and on since new. Sometimes when getting out of the car it reeks of a burning smell and the electric fans are on. Today it was doing it after a 5 mile drive in 39 degree weather, so it wasn't hot.

Any ideas?

Normal. DPF Regeneration.

...and "regeneration" is a great search term if you want to dig in a bit... lots of good threads, since this comes up often.

Carry fire extinguisher. And do not forget to use it if fire breaks out.
