It started as a once a day thing where when I pulled out of my Driveway each morning it would seem to misfire,(felt like something was holding it back) and after a week the check engine light has come on and it seems to sputter once in a while even when warm. I have about 25 thousand on a new Cam and Followers/timing belt etc. Has run flawlessly til now. Any Suggestions? I have not had a chance to pull codes.

It is the Jetta 2005.5 that has the problem and it is Automatic Tran.

GTRAMSAY -- Did you find a solution to the problem?

My car had similar function yesterday, with a strange idle surge, and did not want rev past 2000 RPMs. With a manual trans, it bucked the entire car and seemed the engine wanted to return back to idle, smoking pretty bad. I was able to shut the car off and turn it back on to return it back to normal so I could drive home. But it did it again last night which is when the CEL came on.
What I have researched so far -- it can be anywhere from engine timing, injection timing, injectors, or fuel filter. Going back tonight with VAGCOM to see what codes it's throwing for the CEL to come on.

I'm thinking timing is out of adjustment or you've got a load of bad fuel.

Did either of you recently fill up?

Drain the water separator on the fuel filter, add a bunch of Power Service(white bottle) and get through this tank.

Some of my update -- I actually had thought it may be the fuel before I parked it in the driveway, so I filled up the tank with fresh fuel hoping to "dilute" some of the older stuff. I'll drain the fuel filter when I get a chance, I guess just keeping an eye out for water or excess dirt.

I plugged the car into friends VAGCOM and it was throwing a P1403 EGR code. I tried starting the car again and it didn't want to get off idle this time. Almost knocking/restricting any type of rev. Only thing I can think that could cause this bad of a response would be a bad N18 valve in my mind since it happened so sudden.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You should start your own thread since the OP's got a different engine than you.

If N18 were holding the EGR open you could simply disconnect the hose from the EGR to let it close.

To address the OP''s question, this seems like the symptoms of the IQ being set too low. Not usually the sort of thing that changes drastically all of a sudden, but over time as the injection pump wears, the IQ will gradually get lower if I remember right.

Don't ask me how I know an IQ setting below about 2 will result in a very rough idle, but will smooth out some at higher RPM. VAGCOM will answer this question pretty quickly.

That CEL (check engine light) is just a kid in class waving her hand trying to get you attention because she has the answer. You need to have the codes read. Some places will read them for FREE. Try Autozone or Advanced Auto Parts. Get the exact code (like P0123) not just their translation into English and post it back here.

I had my trusted mechanic pull the code and it reported MAF sensor. Code unrecognizable or some such thing. He replaced the sensor and it seemed to run better but before I got home it was bucking on the Hills and the light came on again. I plan to see if we can get a good read now.

Had the mechanic check code and he got something that indicated a bad circuit for the MAF
but when he checked it all out could find nothing. I am seeing a lot of similar posts on here but have only seen one that was resolved and it was supposedly a piece of debris in the EGR area. Does anyone have knowledge of what this could be? As stated above the MAF sensor was replaced. Also does anybody know if it would be wise to attempt a long trip with this uncorrected as it seems to run fine at high speeds. I wanted to go to Canada on wed. When it is malfunctioning there seems to be a sucking sound in the engine compartment and when the power resumes it goes away immediately. Only once did I get what I guess was LIMP Mode and had to restart to regain RPMs. Usually just letting off the accel. will correct it.

It sounds like there is 'boost' leak somewhere. Can you verify if you have significant smoke at the time of 'whoosh' sound?

I do get black smoke on some episodes but not all. I have an appointment with CHILL IN MASS. on the 3rd of JAN. AND WILL POST CODES AND FINDINGS HERE THEN.

Boost leak. When I had a self induced boost leak, there was a hissing sound when accelerating and the car would do the bucking thing.

If you firmly hold the brake, rev to about 2K RPM, put the car in first and gently let the clutch out, you can cause the turbo to come up on boost so you can listen for a boost leak.

Just be careful to only load the engine for a few seconds at a time or you could damage the clutch.

Well I made the trip to Braintree Mass this AM and had Chris Hill check out my problem. It seems I have three and they all have to do with the air supply.

1. the plastic pipe from the front intake is cracked (not too serious)
2. The seal where the rubber Hose attaches to the metal Leaking (near EGR)
3. The EGR cooler leaking around the shaft. (Seems to be the biggest prob.)
We are ordering the parts and I will post the outcome but this seems to answer most of my Questions.

I want to Thank the Gentleman at ID Parts for suggesting the four sources for service in this area. And I must say Chris is Very Very knowledgeable and a Gentleman to deal with.

Chris Hill at Kraftwerke in Braintree MA, Mike McCann in Westhampton MA, Keith Harley in Lowell, MA, Justin Carven (Greasecar) in Holyoke MA, Darryl Beck in Deerfield, MA. All are skilled, and are in order of how well I know their work. Feel free to call me at IDParts tomorrow or PM me if you want more info or phone numbers.

Also thanks to Nutsnbolts who answered my other post and was right on on his suggestion that it was probably the EGR Cooler leaking.

Had the new parts installed by Chris Hill and everything checks out fine. The culprit was the EGR cooler leaking around the shaft of the diaphragm. Drives like new again.

Had new parts installed and it drives like new. It was the EGR cooler leaking at the Diaphragm so we replaces with new one.
