Broken radiator left me stranded in Guadalajara

Coming back from Puerto Vallerta yesterday, my 2016 TDI GSW suffered a broken radiator. It's at the dealer now and I'm waiting to hear if it will be covered under warranty or not. I had to rent a car to get us the additional 200 miles to our house. Now I'll have to return to Guadalajara when they get it fixed next week (maybe). What a pain!
The car only has 3,000 miles on it, but I did have to add a small amount of coolant once, and I believe the dealer also added a small amount at the one-year service. Maybe a small leak/crack got larger?
Radiator failure didn't turn up much on a forum search here, so hopefully this is a one-off. Let me know if anyone else has had any problems please. Thanks.

You hit anything? on the mk5/mk6 there were a few cases of rubbing of some part, fan or bracket that wore a hole into the radiators to create a pin hole leak, it was very low.

Also with the Air to Water IC that adds another layer of issues.
