Brake assist or problem??

I've been driving my 2011 Jetta TDI Highline for just about a month now.

I know about the brake assist feature in the car, but want to confirm that what I'm experiencing is actually brake assist and not a bigger problem.

Basically, when driving at a slow speed (10-30km/h), if I take my foot off the gas, the car feels like it engages the brake almost right away. No coasting, no nothing. The car doesn't stop, but its almost as though I am hitting the brakes lightly.

When driving on the highway, something similar happens, but not as extreme. Even my passengers can feel the sudden slow down.

Is this what brake assist is supposed to be?

You did not post what transmission you have in your TDI, but I am going to just assume that you have DSG. I have noticed the same thing as you explained and I am almost sure it is a result of the DSG transmission down shifting after we let off the gas. Which in my opinion is great, because its just like down shifting with a manual, and less wear on the brakes.

This my not be correct reason we are experiencing this, but from what I can tell it is, and it seems normal.

yeah i actually love that about dsg, everytime you tab the break or take your foot off of acc. pedal it downshifts for you. I can practically come to a stop without being too hard on brakes. :D

Driving around in coast, in S mode with the clutch let go, when the RPM drops to around 1300-ish in 3rd gear (around 30 km/h) the car seems to be doing clutch braking (higher engine braking effect) instead of revving up RPM when downshifting to 2nd gear. At this time there's a little "ohhhhh" sound. This lasts from about 30 km/h to around 15 km/h.

Thanks for the input guys, glad to hear its downshifting and not braking. Was getting a little worried about premature brake wear.

It is 100% the DSG downshifting. I made a small video on my phone showing the throttle blipping up as I start braking lightly, I will try and post that up a little later.
