A present to the U.S. from Munich:

BMW Adds 7 Series Diesel to Lineup

BMW announced the addition of the BMW 740Ld xDrive sedan to its diesel lineup in the United States. The Bavarian-based automaker currently offers diesel-powered models in the 3 Series and 5 Series as well as in the X5 model range.

The new diesel, available only in the long-wheelbase 7 Series body and with xDrive, BMW’s all-wheel drive system, comes with a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine that develops 255 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque. The engine is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and can go from a standstill to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 6.1 seconds….

Marcus, I'm sure you've heard it before, and I'm saying it now.

I'll believe it when I can test drive one at a dealer. Until then, I don't. :)

Would have been nice to see one at the Detroit Auto Show... or a 328d for that matter. Oh well. :(

Quit complaining! I attended the Boston Auto Show (for the last time!) and not only did they not have that, they had zero, zip, nada for anything remotely Tesla, hardly anything concept... hell, even the Cadillac display didn't have what they are/WILL be selling shortly (can you say ATS coupe?), not to mention 2013 brochures!!! At a 2014 auto show! REALLY Cadillac?! I'll be hitting the New York Auto Show to get my fix. Boston, you've lost me. After over 20 years, no more!

Surely, I'll see the 7 Series in NYC.

After almost 40 years on the market, there are probably few things the BMW 7 Series hasn't offered, but when it comes to the US market, one of those things just happens to be a diesel engine. That is all about to change, however, as BMW announced that it will unveil the 2014 740Ld xDrive at the Chicago Auto Show before sales commence later in the spring.

Offered only on long-wheelbase models with standard all-wheel drive, the new diesel 7 is powered by BMW's 3.0-liter inline-six producing 255 horsepower and a stout 413 pound-feet of torque peaking between 1,500 and 3,000 rpm. While BMW has yet to release any type of fuel economy figures, it did say that its diesel technology is usually good for an improvement of 25 to 30 percent over the gas models – just for fun, that means that the 740 Ld xDrive could get as much as 24.7 miles per gallon in the city and 36.4 mpg on the highway, but that's just doing the math and there is nothing official behind those numbers. Acceleration will take a little longer than in the 740Li xDrive (shown above) with BMW stating 6.1 seconds from 0-60 compared to 5.4 seconds for the gas model.

Another small increase over the gas version will be in price, with the 740Ld xDrive getting a starting MSRP of $82,500 (*not including $925 for destination), which is just a $1,500 bump over the 740Li xDrive. For comparison, the Audi A8L TDI starts at $78,800, while the previous-gen Mercedes S350 Bluetec was priced at $93,000. Scroll down for more info on the new diesel-powered 7 Series, and stay tuned to our live coverage from Chicago in a couple weeks as we'll have live images and hopefully more info.

The 2014 BMW 740Ld xDrive

The first BMW Advanced Diesel 7 Series in the US.

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – January 24, 2014 . . . BMW announcedtoday that the BMW
7 Series would become the latest model line to benefit from BMW Advanced Diesel technology in the US in the form of the BMW 740Ld xDrive Sedan. The new model will feature BMW's 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo diesel engine in the long-wheelbase 7 Series body and will include xDrive, BMW's intelligent all-wheel drive system. The 2014 BMW 740Ld xDrive Sedan will have a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price of $83,425, including $925 destination and handling. It will make its US auto show debut at the Chicago Auto Show in February 2014 and arrive in US showrooms in Spring 2014.

BMW Advanced Diesel now available for BMW's flagship sedan
The 3.0-liter inline-6 BMW Advanced Diesel engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology makes 255 horsepower at 4,000 rpm and 413 lb-ft of torque from 1,500 – 3,000 rpm. It is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The BMW 740Ld xDrive will accelerate from 0-60 mph in 6.1 seconds. US EPA fuel economy estimates are not yet available, however, other models equipped with this engine have seen a 25 – 30 percent improvement in fuel efficiency over their direct gasoline-powered counterparts. Standard features like Driving Dynamics Control with Eco Pro mode and Auto Start/Stop will help the driver to reduce fuel consumption in real-world driving situations.
Through the latest in advanced diesel technologies and the use of weight-saving aluminum block and head designs, BMW's Advanced Diesel powerplants represent a key component of the BMW EfficientDynamics strategy for the reduction of fuel consumption and emissions while providing exceptional BMW driving dynamics.
The 3.0-liter inline-6 BMW Advanced Diesel engine features a single turbocharger with variable vane turbine technology. This design helps improve low-end torque while facilitating precise control of the boost pressure and eliminates the need for a wastegate.
The engine uses the latest generation of electronically controlled high-precision diesel injection system. The system plays a significant role in the reduction of fuel consumption as well as exhaust emissions. The normal operating pressures reach as high as 1800 bar (26,107 PSI) and the fuel injectors can deliver multiple injections over extremely short durations of time, helping to reduce exhaust emissions.
The exhaust gas treatment system is specifically designed to comply with ULEV II emission standards. It uses a combination of a Nox Storage Catalyst, Diesel Particulate Filter, and the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system with no fewer than nine specific sensors working in concert to keep exhaust emissions to an absolute minimum.
The all-aluminum crankcase and hollow camshafts not only save weight, they also contribute to noise and vibration reduction. Additionally, the timing chain is placed at the flywheel end and not toward the front of the engine which further reduces rotational vibrations.

BMW Advanced Diesel models in the US
The 740Ld xDrive Sedan joins a growing list of BMW Advanced Diesel models offered in the US which now includes:
328d and 328d xDrive Sedans
328d xDrive Sports Wagon
535d and 535d xDrive Sedans
X5 xDrive35d Sports Activity Vehicle

The 2014 BMW 740Ld xDrive Sedan will make its US auto show debut at the Chicago Auto Show in February 2014 and arrive in US showrooms in Spring 2014.

Hey, that operating pressure sounds similar to our NMS Passat TDI operating pressure. Does that mean that this BMW Series 7 diesel model uses a Bosch CP4.1 fuel pump like ours???

You test drove the powertrain it uses when you test drove my 535d at TDIfest2013.

What I find interesting about the 7-series diesel is it is using the exact same powertrain that my 535d uses. I'm not too surprised given that it would be a slam-dunk for emissions certification and needed in the model lineup to meet the increased CAFE standards IIRC taking effect in 2016.

And again... Euro 730d = US 740d. Higher model numbers ftw.
Awful badging decision IMO. Long ago the last two digits of the BMW model designation went from actual displacement (in deciliters) to "equivalent power". So how can they have the same engine in these models?: Euro 730d, US 740d, US 535d?

Annoying. It must mean the marketing types have taken over from the engineers.

Not true anymore. Both BMW and M-B give some bull$hit answer like "forced induction makes the engines perform differently from their actual displacement." C-Class with 1.8 liter turbo 5 is a C250. 2.1L diesel in the E-Class is E250. Whatever.

Pure marketing hogwash, these nameplates. And for BMW at least, it's not really a recent thing as the 1980's vintage 325e and 528e used the same 2.7 liter engine...

Looks like all the "base" engine 7-series in the US are 740s, including the one with the 3 liter six cylinder gasser. They're probably being consistent, just like the 2.0 diesel in the 3-series is a 328.

The 740i is the base gasser 7 in Europe too - the single turbo 730d is the base diesel. A 740d exists as the next level up in Europe (twin turbo 313hp, so similar power level as the gasser). Then there's the tri-turbo 750d. All engines, no matter how many turbos they have, are labeled "TwinPower Turbo"
Consistency what?

730d: Comes in short wheelbase RWD and AWD, long wheelbase RWD:

740d: Comes in short wheelbase only, RWD/AWD

750d: Come in short/long wheelbase AWD only

I was reading about those engines in a Top Gear review of the 7-Series. Too bad we don't get them here.
