I was driving my car today and not more than a mile down the road I heard a load blow off and noticed white smoke I immediately pulled over and killed it. I check my oil and it was kinda low which I thought was weird because I always check it. As I turned it aroujd I turned it off and coasted all the way home and noticed a trail of oil. Any experience or help with the situation? Car has about 115000 miles and runs synthetic

No TDI's...yet
Did you lose power or did you turn it off before you had a chance to notice?

Oil coming out of the exhaust? Low oil? If so, and smoke, I'm thinking the turbo went bye bye. Taking off the intake and inspecting for play may give you some more clues? It's not hard if I can do it.

Loud noise and white smoke would make me want to check for headgasket leak suspicions, but what you described does not sound like it.

No power was lost and I believe there was oil coking out of the exhuast and am almost positive it was a turbo failure I was mostly curious as to what could cause something like this. I am taking it up to my dads shop in the trailer today. Luckily it was close to home and I only had to start one other time to put in in the drive way and noticed no turbo noise. The only mod to the car is a cat delete is there anyway it could have runaway and overboosted?

I would not run the engine any more until you figure out what is going on! It does sound like the turbo. You should inspect it, and I would recommend doing so from both sides. I wouldn't be concerned about a runaway from your description....I mean, the engine didn't accelerate wildly on it's own, right? What I would be concerned about is pushing oil into the engine and bending stuff. Hopefully if the turbo is the problem, the failure is only on the exhaust side of things and no oil or shrapnel went into the engine.

Well I took it apart today and drained about a court of oil from the intercooler and got it all ready for removal tomorrow although in my turbo house I found part of the turbo shaft

idParts has great prices on replacement turbo's. I would never buy a new unit of the same thing...seems like lots of them give up the ghost early! But, when mine went I was real tight on funds and bought a used unit which is still working well for me. I do think I may have contributed to the demise of my turbo, but not sure. When I first got the car I didn't realize how hard lugging the engine was on the turbo, and that it's not wise to just push the pedal down and let the rev's come up from 1500 or so in 5th gear! My car is a slushbox, but I use the tiptronic feature 99% of the time. Now I always make sure after it's in the next gear that it's over 2,000...usually I shift it up at 3 or higher.

You should probably talk with IdParts directly about your concerns before bashing them on the forums. I've always ordered from ID and have had no problems. Just my .02

I'd try Bora Parts or ID Parts before I ordered a turbo from Kerma. My car had a Kerma Turbo blow up after 30k or less. I've talked to another forum members that has a lot of knowledge in that area, and he told of seeing a Kerma turbo with grinding on the impeller to try to get the balance right. Just a warning...I'd check that thing out nice and good. Don't someone else to be in the "replace a turbo again quite shortly" boat. Not hear to bash Kerma/promote other vendors. I've been very happy with Bora Parts, and ID parts seemed to do me ok as well.
