What you really need at this point is someone that can accurately diagnose your turbo situation. VW dealers are notorious for replacing turbos with crappy reman units when there was nothing wrong with the original turbo. The profit margin on those must be spectacular. STAY AWAY from the dealer!

I would find a mechanic recommended by this forum in your area, a TDI specialist, and somehow get the car to him. That's really the only way you'll know what's going on. But, you can also try to self diagnose with help from this forum, start by reading several threads on turbo failure (they're all over the forum) and then by taking photos and asking questions.

The usual mode of failure for these turbos is that the bearing inside the spinning core gets damaged, allowing oil to go through the turbo directly into the intake. In extreme cases, this results in the engine running uncontrollably on it's own oil until it locks up, usually with bent connecting rods and/or damaged pistons.

But, this is usually accompanied by belching dark smoke out the tailpipe. So you might have something else going on.

If this were my car, I would start by learning everything you can about the turbo on this forum, then I'd get my hands a little dirty trying to figure out for myself what's going on. You can easily remove the pipe from the turbo to the intercooler, then inspect the turbo shaft for play. You can also see if a large quantity of oil has accumulated in the intercooler. There are many threads that explain this in better detail.

It's almost always going to be cheaper to fix your car than get a new one. The biggest problem with TDIs is finding a mechanic that knows how to fix them. That's where this forum can be very useful. Best of luck!

Colour of smoke

I am confused:

Dark smoke = unburnt diesel
Blue/dark smoke = unburnt oil
White smoke = raw diesel/water/coolant

Right?

So, the OP said white smoke was coming out of exhaust.

IMO and experience a failed turbo goes along with dark smoke. Right? Or wrong?

There are just too many to list....
Black smoke is burnt fuel, and too much of it, and/or not enough air.

Whitish-blue smoke can be oil smoke OR unburnt diesel (poor combustion).

White smoke, with a lingering haze and very "billowy" like a cloud, is burnt coolant.

I'm surprised no-one has suggested getting a compression test before making any hard choices... just to rule out (or in) damage from hydro-lock...

I meant dark smoke = burnt diesel in previous post.

I just think this car need to get to a knowledgable TDI mechanic as here is now too much fixation on replacing the turbo.

Is it just me or does "coughing white smoke and died" sound more like a head gasket?? Was the temperature hot? When you tried to restart the car did it sound like it was turning over too easy / fast? I would have a compression check run on it just to rule this out before you start tearing it down and ordering parts.

Ok, finally got the car home at the end of last week. Report from the dealer is that the turbine won't spin. I ordered the turbo and it is awaiting installation from an on-site mechanic I have worked with in the past (on a 70's Merc 300D) who specializes in diesels.

One thing we noticed when we got the car to start for a few minutes last week was that the crankcase is getting pressure (spraying oil through the fill cap). He said this could be a blown head gasket, but could also be pressurizing through the oil return in the turbo. The turbo definitely needs to be replaced, so we are starting there.

I do have a Scan Gauge and when the car stalled on the highway, I looked at the temp and it was at 188F (on the Scan Gauge, not the dashboard). I don't know if that is indicative, but maybe hopeful?

How much spray? I popped the top off mine a while ago, and there was a little "spray" coming out. No issues on my car, and I'm 99% sure I've read that others have noticed this too--that a fair amount of air goes into the crankcase.

You will get a spray out of the oil fill, the camshaft is right there.

That's what we used.

So we got everything apart and the turbine was broken into 3 pieces. No collateral damage as far as we can see. I'm at work today while my mechanic is putting everything back together. Fingers crossed. We got the new turbo on last night, so it is mostly just re-installing everything today. We got the intake and all the other parts that were sooted up cleaned out really well. If there is no further damage after all this, it should run even better than before.

Yay! Success! Lots of $$ later, the thing runs like a top with the new turbo and all the intakes and other bit de-carboned.

However, I am now leaking oil. I was afraid it was from the oil supply fitting, but that is fine. It turns out that the brand new oil pan is leaking from a minuscule crack in the pan at the sharp transition in the depression at the bottom of the pan.

Can something like this be buttoned up with JB Weld or something or am I going to have to replace this brand new pan?

If you could drain out the oil and make sure nothing is seeping thru it might work but to fix properly, your taking it off. This happened to a friend of mine too, the new oil pan leaked, he was pissed.

Any thoughts on what I should do with the old turbo? Is it of value to someone? Or do I just recycle it?

I love happy endings! Glad it was just the turbo for you. (oil pan cost should of been on tow truck person mind you...)

Your turbo is a doorstop.

I got a replacement oil pan but have not put it on yet. I patched up the crack with some epoxy putty which has stemmed the flow, but there is still a very slow leak. I put less than 1/4 quart in the other day and that is the first time I've had to add oil since patching it. Still want to get it properly replaced, but was waiting until I hit my next oil change mileage point.

The towing company covered the cost of the parts, but to get them to cover the labor, I would have had to have their shop do the work which was inconvenient at the time.

The car is running great. there are a few other maintenance items I need to see to, but I am broke after the turbo repair. I put a ton of miles on it with my commute, so I don't want to wait too long.
