I have a 2013 Jetta TDI.

Question - is it normal to have black soot in the tail exhaust pipes?

I have had the car for 2 years and I don't recall having soot in the tail exhaust pipes when I first got it.

Bought the car with 17k miles and it currently has 46k miles.

Thanks

Usually a sign of a cracked dpf. If it is showing any codes the Extended Emissions Warranty should cover it. If no codes you just have to wait until they show up then take it in. Get the info on the warranty and read it and know it.

Thank you for the information.
I figured it was an issue.

I scanned it with an obdeleven and there were no codes.

Thank you again

There will be a small amount of soot/ash but nothing major. I have about the same mileage on my Beetle and it isn't visible but a small amount will show on your finger if rubbed. Visibly the tail pipe looks clean.

My beetle took 20,000 miles from when the soot (black tail pipes) was noticed (8/19 - 82k) until the check engine light came on, 6/21 - 101k. In the interim, i had the intake air temperature sensor fail - 92k and intake manifold sensor fail - 97k, no code for the dpf with either of those.
