Bill is scrapping a few MK4s. What parts to grab before they get crushed.

A friend of mine has been going to salvage auctions and picking up damaged VWs for several years.
Some are gassers but most are TDIs.
He pulled the TDI engines and tranys.
Along with some other parts.
I'm getting a whole front-crashed beautiful blue MK3 TDI Jetta from him

Now scrap prices are higher so it's time for him to clean up the farm.

What parts should I grab off them before they go?

I have 2 MK4 TDI projects.
So I'm getting into Mk4s while he is getting out of them.
A 2000 Jetta I've been grabbing sunroof, windshield and door stuff for.
And a 2003 Jetta wagon that I bought from him, that I grabbed good seats, tires/rims and a steering rack for,... so far.

What are some of the spendy parts that go bad?
Or some of the common problem parts like door latches?
What should I stockpile?

More than I need, less than I want
The plastic insert in the door card armrest that the switch cluster snaps into. When the tabs break the cluster pulls out when you shut the door. Fuel door actuator. How’s your hood insulation? Large glove boxes, Jetta shifter consoles with cup holders, non sticky interior parts, any premium floor mats. Jetta ecodes, if any. Hell, just haul them all to your yard.

Rear seats, rear doors, rear hatch and tail lights are all wagon specific. One or two steering wheels including air bags. There's nothing like a new (ish) steering wheel when the old one is clapped out. Maybe a matched set of ecu, cluster, lock cylinders and keys.

I hadn't thought of steering wheels.
Or the plastic inserts around the door controls.
He has a working glove box that doesn't match either of my cars.

I'll see how much he wants for a spare cluster/key/ECU.
That's something he would charge me for I'm sure.
I grabbed a couple nice floor matts but he might have more.
I grabbed some horns because they can be used on any car.
Might figure out if there is any engine wiring I should grab.

You can kiss a deer and wipe out the headlights, grille, radiator and wiring harness. Also the plastic chin at the front gets cracked by driving over parking lot stops and then backing up. Clean inside the fender well shells might be goodness too.
If you don't already have them:
  • A good turbo with working VNT and actuator
  • all the vacuum modules (N75,N18, N239) and EGR valve
  • a spare intake manifold...that way you can burn out the spare so it's ready to swap in when your working one gets gunked up and you don't have to wait with your TDI apart while the manifold goes to the machine shop to be cleaned.
  • A battery that's relatively new.
  • Is your A/C cranky? They wear out.
:)

Jmodge suggested hood insulation,..
I hadn't noticed that was missing on the wagon.

I suppose I should see if he has any hitches.

HEATED front seats, especially if leather. The covers are either hard to find new or ridiculously expensive.
