Each cylinder of the Wärtsilä 14RT-flex96C displaces 1,820 liters, giving the 14-cylinder turbodiesel a total displacement of 25,480 liters. Given that the dimensions of the W16 engine in the Veyron occupy 10,733 liters, you could fit more than two fully disassembled Bugatti engines in just the cylinders of the 14RT.

Each cylinder on the Wärtsilä 14RT-flex96C can push out 7,780 hp, with all 14 cylinders working together, you get a total of 108,920 hp from the marine turbodiesel engine. But what's more impressive is that, unlike most car engines, it doesn't need to hit thousands of revolutions per minute to deliver that power. Instead, it hits peak power at just 102 rpm, which helps it achieve it excellent efficiency.

Aside from its low rpm, the 14RT-flex9C can also achieve a remarkable 50% thermal efficiency. Most car engines can only hit 25 to 30%, so this giant marine diesel engine can extract 100% more power from each liter of fuel it consumes.

You could say its the Vin Diesel of engines.

That reminds me of a friend of mine who had some marine diesel yard art and outside furniture. A piston as big as a barrel and a valve for an end table

Not sure where you got the 10,733 liter number for the Veyron engine. The W16 in the Bugatti displaces a total of 8 liters or 0.5 liters per cylinder..
The words you overlooked were "...the dimensions of the W16 engine...", Not piston displacement, the dimensional volume of the complete, assembled engine.

Hi, Jon
Still off by a LOT. 10,733 liters is 379 cubic feet. Maybe he means the volume of the entire Bugatti Veyron...

I worked on an offshore drilling rig that had 6 of these Wartsila’s on it. I’ll see if I can find the rig details

Hahaha. One piston is almost half the size of the JSW. These engines are over 2 stories tall. Couldn’t even imagine how much they weigh.

"Its largest 14-cylinder version is 13.5 meters high, 26.59 meters long, weighs over 2,300 tonnes, and produces 80.08 megawatts. The engine is the largest reciprocating engine in the world."

Wow I thought the Diesels that I work with were big. They are 4,800 hp to 5,200 hp. I'm a freight train engineer at one of the big western US railroads.
